The Israel-Palestine Conflict: Contested Histories, by Neil Caplan

The Israel-Palestine Conflict: Contested Histories provides non-specialist readers with an introduction and historical overview of the issues that have characterized and defined 130 years of the still unresolved Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

  • Provides a fresh attempt to break away from polemical approaches that have undermined academic discussion and political debates
  • Focuses on a series of core arguments that the author considers essentially unwinnable
  • Introduces readers to the major historiographical debates sparked by the dispute
  • Encourages readers to consider more useful ways of explaining and understanding the conflict, and to go beyond trying to prove who is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’

"This volume suggests a fresh and original interpretation to the history of the Arab Israeli conflict. Caplan juggles skillfully and even-handedly between the two narratives, reflecting the parties’ own views without embracing the cause of any party."
–Joseph Nevo, University of Haifa

"An impressive and very valuable work. One could not ask for a better short history of the conflict. Caplan offers readers a study that is extremely well-informed, resolutely fair-minded, and filled with thoughtful insights."
–Mark Tessler, University of Michigan

Review
"Several of the methodological and analytical chapters (i.e. those dealing with "missed opportunities" and "obstacles to a settlement") are insightful and very helpful. More important, the substantial core of his book demonstrates that through the layers of propaganda, advocacy and sheer hostility an honest, professional historian can still decipher the code of lsraeli Palestinian relations and convey it to his readers." (Bustan: The Middle East Book Review, 2011)

"This is the best book I have seen for use as a text for introductory course on the conflict. Instead of overwhelming students with names, dates, and events, it presents the most important concepts of each stage of the conflict, and connects them to the key issues in contention." (Professor Paul L. Scham, 2011)

"The Israel-Palestine Conflict: Contested Histories provides an impressive, balanced, and comprehensive one hundred thirty year history of the conflict. . . This is an original and important contribution to the study of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and I recommend the book wholeheartedly." (Review of Middle East Studies, 1 November 2010)

"Th[e] focus on 'dueling narratives' is clearly applicable to the Israeli-Palestinian case, and is employed here with great skill. This is also a very self-reflective book, with as much attention given to arguments over interpretation and historiography as to the history itself. Within this framework, Caplan has provided us with one of the best executed overviews of the Israeli-Palestinian (or Arab-Israeli) conflict available. Perhaps the relativists are correct that perfect objectivity is impossible; nevertheless, Caplan has achieved a level of detachment that ought to be an object of emulation." (Israel Studies Forum, Fall 2010)

"A whopping 28-page bibliography and a chronology complete what is surely one of the most accessible, coherent, and balanced accounts available of this very contested history." (Foreign Affairs, January 2011)

"Neil Caplan's concise and excellent primer, The Israel-Palestine Conflict: Contested Histories places Israel's struggle with the Palestinians and the Arabs in perspective. Caplan, a professor of history at Concordia University in Montreal, analyzes the key issues with piercing insight." (The Canadian Jewish News, July 2010)

"The book may serve not only as an advanced introductory reading, but also as an authoritative overview of the literature and disputed issues of the conflict." (H-Soz-u-Kult, May 2010)

"Neil Caplan has devoted a lifetime to understanding, teaching, and writing prolifically about the origins and development of Arab-Jewish relations, and particularly aspects of Arab-Israeli negotiations dating back to before World War I. More than half a dozen scholarly monographs later, in writing this summative analysis, he has again maintained a characteristically meticulous devotion to sources. Almost unique in our professional specialty, he enthusiastically presents an unbiased presentation of viewpoints. It will have wide appeal for followers of the conflict, and can be used as an introductory primer for one's first exposure to the conflict's century-long twists and turns." (Middle East Journal, Spring 2010)

"Indentifies major stumbling blocks ensnaring the potential for peace and eloquently outlines the various intellectual and moral identities of various scholarly approaches. Most valuable is its reconsideration of how history is understood and expressed by scholars, activists, and the victims and perpetrators of this tired and bloody conflict." (Ottawa Jewish Bulletin, March 2010)

"In this age of polarization it is refreshing to read a work on this subject which eschews partisanship, refuses to champion one people over another, and recognizes that both make plausible claims to the same land. (Outlook, November 2009)

From the Back Cover
The Israel-Palestine Conflict: Contested Histories offers non-specialist readers insights into the causes and consequences of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. A general introduction is followed by a detailed historical overview of the issues that have defined more than a century of political tensions and open hostilities.

Caplan highlights the tangible issues over which the parties are fighting, but returns frequently to examine some of the more intangible underlying factors that continue to hamper a peaceful resolution, such as the mutual sense of victimization shared by both parties. Giving voice to the competing narratives of both Palestinians and Israelis, this book breaks away from polemical approaches that have undermined academic discussion and political debates about the conflict. The author introduces readers to the major historiographical debates sparked by the dispute, and suggests more useful ways of explaining and understanding the obstacles to reconciliation and conflict resolution.

It is easy to take issue with an effort to provide a neutral perspective on the conflict. Partisans will inevitably view such projects as biased. I thought that Caplan made an admirable effort to present a clear, concise and impartial look at the historical controversies relating to the conflict.

Caplan is biased. Does not present a fair approach to history
By Levi
I was excited to read this book, at first. However, the more I read the more I realized that Caplan neglected to include all information about the Israeli side of things. I think he may have did this so that his book seems balanced but not telling the entire story is unfair. I do not recommend this book for someone who is looking to a get a fair and balanced approach to the history the Middle East conflict. Instead I would recommend one of two reads: Mitchell Bard's "Idiot's Guide to the Middle East Conflict" or Michael Rydelniks "Understanding the Arab-Israeli Conflict: What the Headlines Haven't Told You".

A sweeping, "magisterial" history of the Roman Empire from one of our foremost classicists shows why Rome remains "relevant to people many centuries later" (Atlantic).

In SPQR, an instant classic, Mary Beard narrates the history of Rome "with passion and without technical jargon" and demonstrates how "a slightly shabby Iron Age village" rose to become the "undisputed hegemon of the Mediterranean" (Wall Street Journal). Hailed by critics as animating "the grand sweep and the intimate details that bring the distant past vividly to life" (Economist) in a way that makes "your hair stand on end" (Christian Science Monitor) and spanning nearly a thousand years of history, this "highly informative, highly readable" (Dallas Morning News) work examines not just how we think of ancient Rome but challenges the comfortable historical perspectives that have existed for centuries. With its nuanced attention to class, democratic struggles, and the lives of entire groups of people omitted from the historical narrative for centuries, SPQR will to shape our view of Roman history for decades to come.

Review
“Beard tells this story precisely and clearly, with passion and without technical jargon…SPQR is a grim success story, but one told with wonderful flair.” (Greg Woolf - Wall Street Journal)

“Though she here claims that 50 years of training and study have led up to SPQR, Beard wears her learning lightly. As she takes us through the brothels, bars, and back alleys where the populus Romanus left their imprint, one senses, above all, that she is having fun.” (James Romm - New Republic)

“By the time Beard has finished, she has explored not only archaic, republican, and imperial Rome, but the eastern and western provinces over which it eventually won control…She moves with ease and mastery though archaeology, numismatics, and philology, as well as a mass of written documents on stone and papyrus.” (G. W. Bowersock - New York Review of Books)

“In SPQR, her wonderful concise history, Mary Beard unpacks the secrets of the city's success with a crisp and merciless clarity that I have not seen equaled anywhere else.” (Ferdinand Mount - New York Times Book Review)

“Beard does precisely what few popularizers dare to try and plenty of dons can’t pull off: She conveys the thrill of puzzling over texts and events that are bound to be ambiguous, and she complicates received wisdom in the process. Her magisterial new history of Rome, SPQR…is no exception…. The ancient Romans, Beard shows, are relevant to people many centuries later who struggle with questions of power, citizenship, empire, and identity.” (Emily Wilson - The Atlantic)

“A masterful new chronicle…. Beard is a sure-footed guide through arcane material that, in other hands, would grow tedious. Sifting myth from fact in dealing with the early history of the city, she enlivens―and deepens―scholarly debates by demonstrating how the Romans themselves shaped their legendary beginnings to short-term political ends…. Exemplary popular history, engaging but never dumbed down, providing both the grand sweep and the intimate details that bring the distant past vividly to life.” (The Economist)

SPQR and Roman identity
By JPS
Posted a couple of minutes before on Amazon.co.uk

This book from Professor Mary Beard is in many respects a masterpiece, but it is also a somewhat original one because it covers the history of Rome, but only its first millennium. The period starts with its foundation, traditionally set at 753 BC, and it stops around to 212 AD, when the Emperor most well-known as Caracalla made all free inhabitants of the Roman Empire into Roman citizens, therefore changing what it meant to be “Roman” and making “more than 30 million provincials into Romans overnight”, to quote the author. The event was indeed momentous, as rightly emphasised by the author, but this was largely because of its far-reaching consequences, and these may only have appeared overtime.

It can seem odd to publish a book on the history of Rome or on the Roman Empire and stop in AD 212, knowing, as we do, that the Roman Empire continued for over two and a half centuries for its Western part, and at least a further century and a half in the East. This is where the book’s title, its meaning, and the author’s intentions are important to understand.

SPQR is the acronym of the Senate and the People of Rome. The meaning refers to a period where the Senate and the People exercised supreme power in the city of Rome, which was a city-state to begin with, then the capital city of Italy, and the capital of an Empire. It also refers to a period where they appeared to exercise such power, as was the case after the so-called “Roman Revolution” from Augustus onwards, during what used to be called the period of the Principate. This is the period where the Emperor styled himself as the “First among equal” or the Princeps - the First in the Senate, and was careful, at least initially, to preserve the appearances of the Republic and of its institutions.

However, this book is really about Roman identity and, more precisely, what it meant to be a Roman citizen, from the foundation of the little city on the Tiber to the million large city that ruled over an Empire centred on the Mediterranean that the Romans arrogantly – but aptly - called “Mare Nostrum” (“Our Sea). It is not about what it meant to be a subject of the Roman Empire, or of the Christian Roman Empire, with multiple imperial capitals and Rome being, at best, only one of them.

Here we get to the (relatively recent) divide between “Classics” and the Greco-Roman city-state model, as opposed to “Late Antiquity” which covers the Late Roman Empire up to the Arab conquests and no longer up to AD 476 only, and which is underpinned by the Greco-Asian concept of imperial power and Emperors. The reader is also “treated”, somewhat amusingly, to the “politically correct” and faintly ridiculous and hypocritical BCE and CE (Before Common Era and Common Era) that have become fashionable and which refer to exactly the same dates as BC (before Christ) and AD (Anno Domini – Year of the Lord), except that they attempt to hide the Christian origin of the supposedly “global” and “universal” dating system.

Since this book is about the formation and the expansion of Roman identity and Roman citizenship, Mary Bard stars by examining, explaining and debunking Rome’s founding myths, most of which seem to have been elaborated between the first century BC and the first century AD. She also analyses more recent Roman founding myths, such as the so-called decisive battle of Actium, and the propaganda of Augustus. Also included is an analysis of what the Roman regimes and societies really were like – the so-called Republic started as an oligarchy and if Roman Senators cum politicians chose, at times, to become “populares”, as Caesar did for instance, it was more about power and self-interest than about genuine interest for the poor. To help with this, the author makes use of recent archaeological findings and excavations in Rome itself, and all of what used to be called (somewhat disparagingly) the other “auxiliary disciplines” such as numismatics (studying old coins) and epigraphy (studying inscriptions).

To conclude, this is a remarkable book written in a very accessible style but nevertheless with few anachronisms and not attempt to “dumb down”, as books targeted towards the so-called “general reader” and written by academic specialists sometimes tend to do. It is also a book that contains numerous and carefully chosen illustrations which are intended to elicit the reader’s curiosity and interest, such as the fake representation of Cicero’s famous appearance in front of the Senate during which he confounded Catiline. Also included are five excellent maps of Rome and its surroundings, including its Empire. Finally, there are no notes but a rather copious section for “further reading” with just about all of the key references included and commented upon for each of the book’s chapters.

There would in fact be much more to mention about this very rich book. By this point, however, I believe that anyone reading this review will have understood how valuable I found it to be and how much I recommend it. Easily worth five stars, and I would have given it more had this been possible.

Excellent history
By Thomas Reiter
I probably can't add much to the other reviews, but did want to contribute a five-star rating for this excellent book.

I liked several things about this book:
a) the author does a good job of challenging assumptions about what we "know" about Rome, usually pointing to a lack of evidence (or at least unbiased evidence) for this position or that (eg, how bad were Caligula, Nero, et al in fact?).
b) I found the chapters about the formation and early years of Rome particularly interesting.
c) the author makes several interesting points about how many Roman expressions and/or attitudes remain with us today.

While not intended as criticism, the following comments might be helpful to other potential readers when deciding whether this book is for them:
1) As mentioned elsewhere, the book ends about 200 AD, well before the end of the empire.
2) The author relies heavily on letters, etc. by Cicero and Pliny the Younger. While this is not surprising given the relative volume of their correspondence (compared to other known sources), readers who are very familiar with these writers might get less out of the book.
3) While the author returns several times to the topic of the unknown history of women, the poor, etc., ultimately I found little of interest on these topics in the book, probably because lack of source materials means there is little to say.
4) Generally there is little discussion of military topics.

In any event, a very interesting and well-written piece of work about Rome.

Roman history woven with discussions of primary source material
By Michael Boyajian
Mary Beard in this book opens with Cicero attacking Cataline and ends with the granting of citizenship to all the inhabitants of the Roman Empire and goes back and forth in time from there while discussing the sources of what we know about the Romans. I have five shoeboxes filled with primary source paperbacks that cover the entire swath of Greco Roman history and what Mary Beard has done is taken the texts in those boxes combined with recent archaeological discoveries and in one place at one time written a magna opus on the Romans replacing myth with fact making it all relevant to the present time. SPQR.

Inspires Creativity.
By Ds
This is a perfect baking book for those looking to be EXTRA creative, in a slightly dark way with their baking! I haven't had a chance to try any of the recipes yet because the decorating seems very time consuming (but totally worth it). This book is limitless. I am so excited to start baking! - Will upload pictures once I do!

Introductory Statistics: A Conceptual Approach Using R, by William B. Ware, John M. Ferron, Barbara M. Miller

This comprehensive and uniquely organized text is aimed at undergraduate and graduate level statistics courses in education, psychology, and other social sciences. A conceptual approach, built around common issues and problems rather than statistical techniques, allows students to understand the conceptual nature of statistical procedures and to focus more on cases and examples of analysis. Wherever possible, presentations contain explanations of the underlying reasons behind a technique. Importantly, this is one of the first statistics texts in the social sciences using R as the principal statistical package. Key features include the following.

    • Conceptual Focus – The focus throughout is more on conceptual understanding and attainment of statistical literacy and thinking than on learning a set of tools and procedures.
    • Problems and Cases – Chapters and sections open with examples of situations related to the forthcoming issues, and major sections ends with a case study. For example, after the section on describing relationships between variables, there is a worked case that demonstrates the analyses, presents computer output, and leads the student through an interpretation of that output.
    • Continuity of Examples – A master data set containing nearly all of the data used in the book’s examples is introduced at the beginning of the text. This ensures continuity in the examples used across the text.
    • Companion Website – A companion website contains instructions on how to use R, SAS, and SPSS to solve the end-of-chapter exercises and offers additional exercises.
    • Field Tested – The manuscript has been field tested for three years at two leading institutions.

This book is great as it explains well about difficult concepts of statistical approaches. It also gives good supports for R scripts and basics as well. I love this book. However, this book might not satisfy ones who are more interested in calculus and equations. In short, this is perfect for getting familiar with statistics and R.

    From the reviews:

“This book addresses the basic use of R for image processing … . The index is well designed and the presentation of the subject is adequate, given the short length of the chapters. Both professionals and students in image processing or statistical data analysis could use this book as a good guide to using R for image processing.” (G. Albeanu, Computing Reviews, July, 2013)

A testament to the valor and determination of a common soldier On September 17, 1861, twenty-two-year-old Jacob Haas enlisted in the Sheboygan Tigers, a company of German immigrants that became Company A of the Ninth Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. Over the next three years, Haas and his comrades marched thousands of miles and saw service in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, and the Indian Territory, including pitched battles at Newtonia, Missouri, and Jenkins’ Ferry, Arkansas. Haas describes the war from the perspective of a private soldier and an immigrant as he marches through scorching summers and brutally cold winters to fight in some of the most savage combat in the west. His diary shows us an extraordinary story of the valor and determination of a volunteer soldier. Though his health was ruined by war, Haas voiced no regrets for the price he paid to fight for his adopted country.

Superb account of the war in the Trans-Mississippi
    By Mike wilson
Mark Christ has thoroughly researched and annotated this personal account of a German immigrant's view of mid-Nineteenth century America. Christ has crafted this annotation of the diary to illustrate the intersection of the New World and Old Europe.

Excellent first hand account of a soldier in the Civil War! It is fascinating to read the details this man journaled. Amazing and humbling what he and his fellow soldiers endured. Thank God for the preservation of these diary's, especially when American history is being rewritten and corrupted an agenda filled State run educational system.

Axis Mundi: The Occult Polar Archetype
    By zonaras
_Arktos: The Polar Myth in Science, Symbolism and Nazi Survival_ by Joscelyn Godwin is an interesting book about occult and pseudoscientific theories on polar shifts, the succession of ages, the Aryan race, the "hollow earth" theory, Nazi underground bases, lost cities, UFOs, mystical powers, theosophy, sex magick and a host of other obscure topics. The book begins with a discussion of the theory of polar shift, its relation to astrological, occult and Hindu calculations concerning the ages the earth has gone through. The actuality of the proverbial Golden Age might have some support if at some point in the past the earth's axis was parallel to the sun and not veering at a tilt. The North Pole would have had a temperate climate, illuminated by the shining stars, moon, the aurora borealis and the light of the sun visible beyond the horizon-a place of eternal light, a theoretical location for the Garden of Eden. Arising from this polar theory is the notion of a primordial polar homeland for the human race. This leads into the bizarre theories of the origin of the Aryan race and the superiority of Indo-European culture and religion over that of the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern Semites. The Nazi believed that the Germans had a mystical homeland in a northern region known as Thule. The theories of the Nazis are examined, including Alfred Rosenburg and his official exposition of Nazi philosophy, _Myth of the Twentieth Century_. The Sicilian esotericist Julius Evola and his book _Revolt Against the Modern World_ also draws from the polar myth. He believed that an original Aryan race migrated from a polar Hyperborea, following a solar religion dominated by the warrior ethos and conquering spirit. According to Evola, the original religion of these Aryans has its elements sown in the myths of world in a variety of cultures. A more aberrant view of Nazi occultism comes from Miguel Serrano, a Chilean diplomat and author. His work _Hitler: El Ultimo Avataro_ describes a cosmic struggle between the Order of Nazis who are currently located in a hidden base in Antarctica against "the Demiurge": Judaism, Christianity and Freemasonry. The deliverance of the Aryan race will come when Nazi flying saucers emanate from Antarctica and take over the world. Many theories have also circulated about a possible "hole at the pole" where adventurers could gain access to subterranean Utopias. Aghartha and Shambhala are two mythical cites in Central Asia whose existence has been either literally or figuratively believed in. The denizens of Aghartha stand for worldly power while Shambhala is the abode of mystical enlightenment. The place of Antarctica is examined in detail as well as the North Pole. While the North Pole has a pleasant reputation (surprisingly Santa's house is not mentioned) as a cozy homeland, the South Pole has stood for the earth's demons. In old legends, treachery, death and monsters have been associated with the South. In modern times this translates into Serrano's secret Nazis in Antarctica plotting against humanity. The Pole figures to a great extent in the various theories of the origins of religion as well. In the period after the Renaissance, Reformation and Enlightenment, many different scholars attempted to develop a unified theory to explain the origins of the world's religions. One theory was one of a universal solar worship. An example of this would be the Gospels written to describe the sun passing through the signs of the Zodiac throughout the year. Phallus worship was another theory, attributing religion to the awe primordial men felt toward the generative and fertile sources of nature. The polar theory is a combination of the two. The swastika also has its origins here. The positions of Ursa Minor taken together throughout the seasons of the year thousands of years ago would have looked liked a swastika when depicted on a chart showing the seasonal observations simultaneously. The mythical "Land of the Sun" in several ancient cultures and astrological setups also show a polar orientation. Godwin notes that King Arthur may be drawn from the polar/solar traditions as well. The "Spiritual Pole" chapter covers the metaphysical practices, including Yoga, which have used polar and axial ideas to stand as a metaphor for an ascent into enlightenment. The last third of _Arktos_ summarizes the theories of why the earth's axis is at a tilt. The "catastrophists" believed that the pole shifted in sudden violent changes in ages past and was responsible for epochal calamities. The "uniformitarians" on the other hand postulated that the earth is continually shifting its polar locations, repeating in cycles. The scientific theories concerning polar shifts are examined, but Godwin draws no conclusions for or against the idea. Of course, most of the occult literature on the subject is totally at odds with objective science. The most outlandish theorist examined here is Cyrus Teed, AKA "Koresh" (no Waco connection). This mystic propagated the idea that we are actually living on the concave of earth's inner shell. The stars, planets and the sun are reflections inside the earth itself. One aspect of Godwin's book that makes it informative is his objectivity-and possibly even a subtle hint of approval--towards his subjects. Godwin concludes by making reference to the Kali Yuga, the Age of Iron that describes the modern world process of decay according to Hindu eschatology, in addition to the "end of the Age of Pisces." Although Godwin does not take Pisces as referring to Christ, he makes his support clear toward the idea of the "earth reasserting its rights" with a polar shift--a massive global catastrophe--that will destroy the pretenses of humanity and inaugurate the next Golden Age.

I enjoyed this book, especially the fact that Dr. Godwin went through a lot of material on the fringe of known science, and non-English published works.(like Miguel Serrrano) It presents a detailed assessment of Shambhala and Agartha in literature and theososphical-like writings.
Some chapters are not as exciting, and one would be recommended to seek out Loompanics Publishing's _Subterranean Worlds_(which quite obviously influenced _Arktos_.

    Hyperborea Revealed!
    By New Age of Barbarism
Long has man hungered for a return to a Golden Age, an era before the present one when he lived in idyllic bliss and was free from all the constraints and toils of modernity.
This book tells the fascinating tale of a source of hidden wisdom carried down through the ages preserved in the archetype of the Poles. The author examines the presence of this tradition in the writings of many eccentrics, cranks, mystics, visionaries, scientists, and science-fiction writers. He looks chiefly at the writings of H. P. Blavatsky and Rene Guenon, and he tells the tale of the "Aryan race" as revealed through a set of polar mysteries. Everything from the Nazi secret societies (e.g. the Thule society), to the neo-Nazi Black Order, to the spirituality of the polar tradition, to the mad and bizarre ramblings of insane prophets is told in full detail. Writers such as Evola, Schwaller de Lubicz, and Serrano are examined and their possible links to fascism explained. The author also deals with the Theosophists, the mysticism surrounding the poles, and the idea of a Ruler of the World who lives in Tibet, Aghartha, or Shamballah. Much is dismissed as mere nonsense, but also the true secret behind these myths is hinted at. Finally, scientific evidence surrounding the Earth's tilt and the precession of the equinoxes is presented, and the writings of the "illuminates" are compared with those of modern day geologists. The reader is left spellbound by tales which are not only totally bizarre (e.g. the hollow earth theory of Teed, that we live inside a hollow earth on it's concave inner surface), but which often also become incoherent and border on paranoid delusion. (There is a link here between these authors and madness.) The real question that needs to be asked is, What does it all mean? In one particularly disconcerting passage at the end of the section on the "Spiritual Pole", the author sums up what he believes to be the presence of the polar archetype in many diverse writers and visionaries. He then goes on to say that the pole must not be political because of its use by the Nazis (in the Thule Society). I feel he is disingenuous here after citing example after example of writers who used the polar idea precisely as a cover for political aims. Obviously the pole is political, and it remains so. I believe it would be more correct to say that not only is the pole political, but also that it's politics are too deeply entrenched for us to fully understand at this time. Perhaps, it is universally present in the mind of man, biding it's time, until the dispossessed individual is put under sufficient stress that it reveals itself to him and provides him with an interpretative framework to understand the world through (viz. Jung's "collective unconscious"). When someone turns to wonder, What is this all for?, this is when the archetypal appearance of the pole becomes manifest to him. It is an angry reaction to those societal forces which would attempt to oust tradition and reconstruct society along more "satisfactory" lines. As such, it is not revolutionary, but restorationist in nature. This is the meaning of the polar symbolism and its use by the various writers and prophets presented in this book. Fundamentally, it is a call for a return to tradition, the only tradition that predates the modern era and that will restore order to the chaotic world in which we live.

Core Attachment Therapy© is very respectful to the child and very empowering to the parents. It allows families of adoption a way to bond at the core level which has proven over and over to move children through their emotional issues and needs to then be comforted by the very people they need-their new parents. When this moment of the adopted child letting their new parents “in” occurs, it is so heartwarming and it does transform the heart of the adopted child.

A "must -have " if you work with adopted or permanently placed children!
    By Denise Combs, MFT
Core Attachment Therapy By Dorothy Derapelian M.Ed., LCMHC (Review)
I am so excited about this book and Ms. Derapelian's amazing work. I have been following her work for about a year, after attending a brief introductory workshop on Core Attachment Therapy. I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California, specializing in work with children with trauma histories. I am also an advanced trainer of the Nurtured Heart Approach. This pivotal book to me represents the "missing link" for so many of us helping families who's adopted children have been impacted by many traumas, including attachment disruptions. This book is very accessible, respectful, and straight forward. There is no blame, only hope - and more importantly specific methods to foster bonding and attachment in developmental sequence. It addresses the foundations and development of this approach, a simple understanding of the neurobiology underlying trauma and attachment, the phases of attachment, a brief introduction to The Nurtured Heart Approach, and then outlines with vivid descriptions the "Mommy/Daddy" games used in parent-child therapy to stimulate and simulate the attachment process. Therapists (and parents) will see and understand where in the child's development the attachment had been disrupted, and be overjoyed to experience the "repair" taking place. Ms. Derapelian also includes a parent assessment interview, attachment symptom list, a parent journal and a follow up questionnaire, which helps therapists and parents to document successes and improvements (lessening of challenging symptoms). I am so very grateful for this monumental book and work, and look forward to this approach becoming accessible to therapists and parents alike. This work is critical for the adoption/permanent placement community. Denise Combs, MFT

    Love the creativity & knowledge!
    By Sherry A. Blair
I am so thrilled to see this work. In the realm of working with children and youth with attachment challenges, we need all the creativity we can get. Dorothy Derapelian not only weaves in her clear-cut knowledge on the topic, but shares her personal experience in adopting her own daughter which gives her unique insight into facilitating these playful activities. I have personally tested some of the activities myself and have found them very helpful in guiding the parent and child to recreate a bond and move toward healing.
