Well researched solutions

First of all, congratulations to Bertrand for having had the courage to write this book and to let others benefit from it. A Big Thank You to him.

This book has become my bedside book. I regularly re-read a paragraph because it’s important if one wants to fully benefit from it and not forget anything. I can attest to the fact that everything he writes about « polyposis » is true but I didn't know everything, and this book has given me valuable advice and reassured me about my ideas.

The sulfite problem that I’m referring to is very important, I know. If you are committed to living by Bertrand’s advice, YOU SHOULD PERSEVERE and not give up when it’s going well because every time you start again, you begin at zero. You need time to get better but relapsing can happen quickly and Bertrand is adamant about this.

Champagne and wine whenever you want it and great food over the weekend is enough to ruin everything.

I should have read this book before.. but at least now I know.

Well written. I've suffered from this condition for years and like the author had polyps removed and really don't want to repeat the process. What he says makes a lot of sense. I'm encouraged ordering a few of the things that the author recommends (cheaper than surgery) since trying just 2 of the simple things he suggested helped.

Ok, but not the best source

Walbank's small book on the Hellenistic period is certainly well priced -- your students won't complain about that. However they might complain that the book hardly reads or is laid out like an introductory textbook, which it clearly is meant to be. Thus why it is interesting reading for the higher level historian, it is not the best for undergraduates or laypeople.

A bit disappointing for the expert or student

Written over thirty years ago, F.W. Walbank's "The Hellenistic World" is intended to serve as a very brief overview of this historical period, accessible to both experts and newcomers. It generally succeeds in this objective, but is by no means an authoritative study. The book provides a brief summary of political events, and describes the wars of Alexander's successors (Diadochi). It's main focus, however, is on the three principal Hellenistic kingdoms (Egypt, Macedonia, Syria) - each given a chapter - and the cultural, economic, and religious developments in their societies. There is also an interesting chapter on "the frontiers of the Hellenistic World", which deals with Greek exploration. However, I found the maps and pictures provided were somewhat mediocre (except for one good photo showing coins).

Walbank's book has some very strong points. He produces a good survey of the scant primary sources recording this era (Polybius, Arrian, Plutarch, Quintus Curtius Rufus, etc.), and encourages his readers to consult them. His approach to Alexander is kept in context, emphasizing how his policies foreshadowed and later influenced those of Hellenistic rulers. This analysis highlights four distinct themes: Alexander's attitude towards Persia and his transformation of the Macedonian army, his increasing despotism, authoritarian relations with Greek city-states, and the establishment of his divinity cult as a propaganda tool. Walbank also pays much attention to the Greek settlement of Hellenistic states, and how this affected eastern civilizations.

On the other hand, even though this work is meant as an introduction, it still contains some glaring omissions. Pontus does not seem to exist for Walbank. The adventure of how Mithridates I came to found this kingdom in 291BC is not even mentioned. Neither are the wars of Sulla, Lucullus, and Pompey against the mighty Mithridates VI and his Armenian allies (see Mommsen's "History of Rome"). We know that Mithridates I's army included divisions of silver shields. It would have been interesting to examine how Greek culture influenced the lower Caucusus region. Moreover, there is practically nothing on the Greco-Bactrian kingdom. Yet this was an important and powerful realm, for its greatest king (Demetrius I) invaded India when his Mauryan allies were overthrown by the Sunga dynasty. The chapter on "the coming of Rome" is almost exclusively devoted to Rome's Macedonian wars. Attalus of Pergamum is scarcely addressed, and links between Egypt and Carthage are not discussed. In general, the book is dominated by Greco-Roman relations, and fails to properly investigate the effects of the rise of Parthia and the Mauryan Empire in India.

In Walbank's defense, it should be said that very little is understood about the Hellenistic period, and few English academics have published books on the subject. Most of the literature in the field discusses Ptolemaic Egypt, because that's where a majority of the evidence (papyri, inscriptions, etc.) comes from. If you are a student seeking a more in-depth analysis, then Peter Brown's "Alexander to Actium" remains by far the best reference in English. "The Cambridge Ancient History" volume 7 (Hellenistic Monarchies & Rise of Rome) and volume 8 (Rome & the Mediterranean 218-133BC) are also worth a look. French scholars have done a very good job of researching this era. The classic work for them is probably Edouard Will's "Histoire politique du monde hellenistique" (which has unfortunately never been translated into English).

In conclusion, I must admit that having previously studied this subject I was a tad disappointed. Walbank is a serious scholar who writes in a pleasant style, but his work focuses too much on the triumvirate of the "big three" (Egypt-Macedonia-Syria) at the expense of other dynasties and nations whose histories are just as fascinating.

Tough going, better as a supplement

I'm glad I read this along with the class that assigned it as a textbook. It is enormously informative, comprehensive, and concise.
Unfortunately, it is almost unreadable. Walbank assumes the reader has a familiarity with a lot of ancient persons (many with the same names) and customs (cult of Arsinoe, anyone?). If you want to know about Alexander the Great, I suggest you go straight to the horse's mouth and read Penguin's edition of Arrian's _Life of Alexander_.
Likewise, grab a book on the Ptolemies, one on the Macedonians, the Selefkids and the early Romans. Then maybe this book will make some sense.

Disasters in Field Research: Preparing for and coping with unexpected events is an excellent field research guide book not only for beginners, but also a check-list for experts. I found the book interesting and enriching as it extensively discusses actual challenges of conducting field research apart from theoretical courses that are mostly set in an ideal setting. The book focuses on collecting data in low or middle income countries and provides comprehensive guidance on all possible scenarios whom the authors have experienced themselves in their extensive field researches across different countries. At times amusing and other times sad, the book also benefits from extensive firsthand accounts of researchers in the fields and their means of coping or lack of thereof.
It is a book I recommend not only for people who are planning for extended field researches out of their countries, but even for those who collect data in their local communities and familiar settings.

Comming from a rasta....

Comming from a Rasta I must admit that it is hard to find books that teach u to cook vegeterian and "ital" all at the same time. All though I already knew how to do both BEFORE I bought the book, It was still a nice gesture to see the recipes ranging from all over the carribean and African Decent. Some of these recepies include but are not limited to peas and rice (made with brown rice), herb dumpling, plenty of different soups, stews, tofu patties, derserts including Ital ice creams (mango, coconut, pawpaw...etc ), Breads made with no added perservaties or dairy products (fully vegeterian), and plenty of fresh fruit drinks as well. Including carrot juice (zion juice), pawpaw, freshly homemade punches, etc....Being a cook myself I must say that i was impressed by the context. These receipies are more or less like Cousines rather then just ordinary Vegeterian food. One can make good use from it. A meal that I have often found most deseriable in the book is the vegeterian stuffed bell peppers taken from the entree catagory, peas and rice/ sweet corn and rice taken from the side dish category, and steamed callaloo taken from the vegetable and side dish category. Having it washed down with some sweet coconut water or some other kind of NATURAL fruit (taken from the juice senction ) or vegetable juice makes a deserible meal that vegeterians, non vegeterians, Rastas, and non Rastas will feel priveledged to have enjoyed.

The Rasta Cookbook is the perfect collection of authentic vegetarian recipies from Jamaica for anyone to enjoy. The introduction describes some aspects of the Rastafari movement, including the importance of Ital foods. The book emphasizes 'the core philisophy on which the Rastafari base their eating habits and cuisine' in that, "You are what you eat". The author offers helpful guidelines about preparation while stressing the importance of cleanliness. I also like the fact that she suggests possible substitutes for dairy products and even a Glossary of Terms is provided for readers who may be unfamiliar with some of the more exotic ingredients. The recipies are clear, easy to follow, fun to make, and even better to taste, (Yes, that's right. Ital food can be flavorful too). I give this book a five-star rating.

Nice, but not for everyday.

If you're in the mood for an occasional swing to the Rasta side then this may be the book for you. I have tried a few of the menu selections and wasn't really that impressed. The food is light and (of course) meat free, but I feel the meals lack a little in the flavor department.
The nice thing about this book is that you can create some interesting delights that are more of a conversation piece than the best food on the table. The book gives a little background on what it is to eat Rasta and the spiritual reasons for doing so. Makes for great conversation.
Although I'm not very impressed with the food itself, there are some creative dishes to be found inside. Although I don't LOVE it, I do *like* the book and feel that it is a worthwhile purchase for anyone who would like to cut meat out of their diet and/or try something new.
