Simple, Straight Forward Lydiard - Even Addresses Current Trends

I give this book 5 stars because although the book is roughly 10 years old, it still is practical, current and the training still has merit. The book, perhaps like Lydiard, is direct and is barely 100 pages. But what makes it so current even today are his discussions of topics such as over engineered shoes that weaken the feet and can actually contribute to injury and this is written almost a decade before the now classic 'Born to Run'. In addition, he describes the need to 'run tall', landing lightly on the feet with low hands relaxing the upper body that allows the runner a slight tilt, which in many ways is very similar to POSe without concern for cadence. Of course a lot of the basis of the book is the need for base training, providing a foundation for racing. The confusion years ago with Lydiard supposedly endorsing long slow distance running is a myth as although
he advocated easy days for recovery days, a lot of long runs required a significant effort, they were not slow at least not for the non-comptetive runner. The other positive I like about Lydiard's methods is the break from routine training advocating fartlex, a free play style of running and not getting addicted to intervals on the track worrying too much about numbers. He was more concerned with the quality effort over numbers. There is a lesson in all this in keeping runners engaged by variety in training. Lydiard and Gilmour advocate that speed training can be added for peak performance at the late stages to allow for peaking but that also doing so after a decent base limits injury. The book includes a lot of basics covering injuries, rehabilitation, vitamins, running shoes etc. A nice range of subjects although they may appear basic for the well read runner. I had no problem with the pictures as I am somewhat familiar with the drills and I am actually utilizing some of the drills. They are important particularly for masters runners as we all lose flexibility as we get older and these drills help the synapses maintain that ability. As to the concern about the mileage, Lydiard is most likely addressing the competitive masters runners that can endure high mileage. In all books that provide training guides, you have to modify them in accordance with your own fitness, physical tolerance, proneness to injury and of course your goals. For me, an over 50 runner, I run 30-35 miles a week and do a modified mix of these workouts that include hills for my overall fitness and to compete at the local age group race level. To get a more detailed step up further on Lydiard's training style, consider the book "Healthy Intelligent Training' by Livingston, a Lydiard disciple.

Schedule is worth the price

This book doesn't go into detail about why you should do each of the exercises shown in the schedule, but I recommend this book anyway because the schedule for masters would be a useful guide. This is basically why I got this book.
I have read a previous book of his from '79 called Run the Lydiard Way, which gave the purpose of each of his exercises. Unfortunately this appears to be out of print, and I don't know if any other of his existing books provide the details.
For example, you do hill springing for ankle flexibily and knee lift, repetitions (time, distance, and quantity don't matter, as long as you feel tired at the end) for anaerobic capacity, leg speed and sprint training for speed and technique, 100 and 50m windsprints for sharpening and maintaining anaerobic capacity, and time trials for getting the body conditioned to running your race distance.
Some say his training concepts are outdated, but the fact is that all middle and long distance training are based on them. I have tried other schedules and have found his schedules to be the most effective for me. Some have said his 100 miles per week recommendation is outdated, but I have found his schedules will still work for you regardless of what mileage you decide to do.
Btw, fyi the 'old' man on the cover that another reviewer lammented over is an Olympic Bronze medalist (Barry Magee) in the '60 Rome Olympics, trained by Lydiard to be the fastest white man over the distance at that time.

Good stuff to jog an older memory

This book brings out points that older runners maybe weren't aware of or had forgotten. For instance the emphasis on the high knee kick was something I did naturally when in my 20s but after taking 15 years off from running, my body just doesn't do it naturally. I've begun to really notice my form in training. The emphasis on quality running vs. high quantity for older runners is sitting very well with me. I can't do high miles per week anymore but I make sure there's lots of quality. Exercising the posterior muscles to enhance form is something I never thought of. I think we all get in the habit of developing arms and chest for our egos and forget about the back. The book is definitely a jumpstart in attitude. I just wish they used a younger looking runner to demonstrate the exercises. I feel old looking at the book's cover and knowing its geared toward me, a 44 year old. The guy on the cover must be in his 60s.

I have reviewed hundreds of technical books over the years for our magazine. Each gets a letter "grade" of either A, B, C, D, or F. Very few ever get an "A"but Gary Conner's book does and it is well deserved. It is entertaining, believable and loaded with graphics -- an easy, enjoyable and educational read.

Now, small manufacturers can reap the profits of Lean

For decades, large manufacturing operations have benefited from Lean Manufacturing principles. Many small, job-shop-type manufacturers try and fail to implement the Lean approach because Lean Manufacturing principles were developed for the large manufacturing environment.
Gary Conner has successfully adapted Lean principles to fit the job shop environment and presents them in an enjoyable story that allows the reader to witness the power of Lean. He makes Lean Manufacturing principles understandable, clearly demonstrating how job shops can implement them successfully. I highly recommend this book to small shops wishing to reap the profits of Lean.

Another DISTRACTION in the Pursuit of Understanding LEAN

I am astonished that this publication would be recognized by the Shingo Prize Committee. I was originally optimistic about the contents based on the title. FOOLED AGAIN! The book is simply a collection of QUALITY based analysis and improvement tools, a few "war stories" and a very general discussion of LEAN tools and systems. I have been a Lean Practitioner for over twenty years and have had the privilege of learning from some of the original teachers of Lean in the United States. "Lean for the Small Shop" is another of the flurry of textbooks recently published that offer very little in the way of useful information about how to successfully design and build a lean production system. Small shops really do need a simple and useful guide for understanding and implementing a lean system. "Lean for the Small Shop" is NOT that guide. If you are the "Lean Champion" in your company, read "Lean Production Simplified" by Pascal Dennis (the BEST introductory text that exists today). Do look at some of the series by Shigeo Shingo or Taiichi Ohno for your first "baby steps". Beyond that, find a real lean "sensei".

Beyond that, find a real lean "sensei". AVOID using a consultant just because he is near your location. There are still only a handful (literally) of Lean practitioners who really kow what they are doing here in America. Also don't be fooled by those universities who have put their otherwise good name on a group of people (Lean charlatans) who really can offer you nothing of value except a great looking "certificate".

I have never before read a book that touched my life for so long. I first read the book on it's first printing, I believe it was in the 60's. remembering this book as an adult, i was in a desperate search to find a copy......It was no longer in print......yet two years into my search..out of the blue..it came back out in a reprint........I again am searching for this book .....not for me but for those around me. this book carries the highest form of healing i have ever came across in my life.. I would deffinently recomend reading this book......and buy a second to share so you don't lose yours.

Helped me accept my father's death.

This book shed an incredible light to my existing faith. My father died of cancer at an early age of 69. The title of this book was mentioned to be by a very young stranger, that for some unknown reason knew I should read this book. This book gives you the realization of the supreme being and that everyday is a planned lesson that we must learn to reach God. It teaches that good and bad must be experienced to perfect our souls. It will reveal to anyone that we can surpass all that life on this side offers and when we have finished the testing ground, we will reach "Many Wonderful Things"

Many, many, many wonderful ideas

A dear friend recommended this book to me. At first, I couldn't get into it then I was so absorbed by it that I couldn't put it down, I was taking it every where with me just to read a page at a time. The theme is so simple and so important - love yourself - turn away from self-condemnation, sorrow, resentment - and love yourself. Then, seek a partnership with God, seek/accept loving, encouraging support to be a wonderful, generous person that wants to grow and help others grow (in the way that is best for them). I have so enjoyed this book, so enjoyed sharing it with others. My favorite response is when people see the title - Many Wonderful Things and say it must be a book about dancing or flowers or my girlfriend - whatever people interpret as Many Wonderful Things.

First of all the customer service at Amamzon is very good, but their online information about shipping times is very inconsistent. I ordered the book with expediated shipping that said I would recieve the book in 4-7 business days then they send me a confirmation letter saying I would receive the book in 14 business days this wasn't good for me I needed the book for a graduate course I am taking. I complained and Amazon apologized and gave me a 5$ credit on my next purchase then the book shows up on time in 4 business days. So to me there shipping policy and time quotes should be more consistent.

About the Author
Adam Filippi is the Director of Global Scouting for the Charlotte Hornets, after spending 10 seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers and winning 3 NBA championship rings. As a player development coach, Adam has worked with over 100 NBA and overseas professional players. Specializing in shooting technique, and a world class shooter himself, Adam has written 2 books: in February 2011, he released his first instructional basketball book SHOOT LIKE THE PROS: The Road to a Successful Shooting Technique, with a foreword by Jerry West; in April 2016, his second book, Mastering the Art of Free Throw Shooting, with a foreword by Hubie Brown. A Certified Personal Trainer and Performance Enhancement Specialist by the National Academy of Sports Medicine, he has conducted camps, workshops and clinics in the USA, Spain, Italy, China, Ireland, Sweden, United Arab Emirates and more, to teach fundamental basketball skills to players of all ages and levels.

Basic, intermediate, some advanced...excellent!

My son seem to improved his skills, technics, tactics and fine tune / adjustment to his shots. Practice make pefect. Believe in yourself, don't second guess yourself (don't become your own worst enemy.). Practice, be positive and supportive. Love the games, win or lose, it's all about having fun, improve your skills, technics and tactical. Peace in the courts, keep it fun and real.

THE BASKETBALL SHOOTING BIBLE !

Fantastic book ! A must read for coaches and players of all levels ! All areas of basketball shooting are explained clearly and in detail, from the fundamentals of shooting mechanics to the game situations, from the physical and mental aspects to the drills. This is really "The Shooting bible" !
