This book provided great insights into how big data is applied across many industries. Its easy to read and each page confirms to a standardised template making it simple to use as a reference book.

I would recommend this book to those new to big data as an initial starting point to its many applications. This book is otherwise to light on information to those that already have hands on experience and wants to dig deeper.

Great high level summaries, but very little detail

If you're looking for a very simple overview of how big data is being put to use then this is the right book. I was hoping for more details than were available in this particular volume. The stories are high level summaries that take between 5-10 minutes each to read. This is great if all you're looking for is anecdotal information about big data so you can talk to others about the topic. If you're looking to truly learn about big data and the technology that helps us take advantage of it I think you'd need to find another book.

Given the cost of the book I'm surprised at the content inside of it. It is definitely not worth 30 dollars. If you're fortunate enough to have a work subscription to something like Safari Books etc. check that out, it might be included free.

BEWARE AMAZON ONCE AGAIN GROUPED REVIEWS TO OTHER BOOKS HERE

Most of the reviews are for other products. This is a wonderful book. It isn't the Holmes stories. Still a five star book. The book is laid out to give an overview of Doyle himself and narratives on major characters - Sherlock, Watson, Moriarity, Lestrade. Each description running from five to ten pages each. Followed by well written descriptions of each of the adventures, the four novels. A nice side work of what was happening in Doyle's life and world events etc. There are lots of full color illustrations and black and white photographs included. The descriptive breakdown of each story help fans with insights into what's going on in each story. There are some good pieces on the influence that Doyle's writings and characters continue to have on his readers and other writers as well. A really well done work on the subject. Very interesting reading.

An Entertaining, Informative Overview of Sherlock Holmes & Company!

Will the reading public ever get enough of Sherlock Holmes? Over one hundred years after Holmes and Watson first graced the pages of THE STRAND MAGAZINE, interest never flags. Novelists continue to try and capture Conan Doyle's lighting-in-a-bottle while others put out learned tomes describing, analyzing and dissecting the most famous fictional character in the English language. The latest such book is the Dorling Kindersley SHERLOCK HOLMES BOOK. A 2015 release, the book is part of that publisher's BIG IDEAS SIMPLY EXPLAINED series. It's also catnip for the legions of Holmes fans.

After introductory chapters on Conan Doyle, Holmes, Watson, Moriarty and Lestrade, the book explores the Holmes canon story-by-story in chapters entitled 'The Early Adventures,' 'The Great Detective,' 'A Legend Returns,' 'Holmes Takes a Last Bow,' and 'The Final Deductions.' Each story/novel rates a two-ten page write-up that entertainingly summarizes the plot and main characters. Accompanying sidebars explore various elements of that story. For example, the section on THE ADVENTURE OF THE EMPTY HOUSE has a sidebar biography of Colonel Sebastian Moran; the SILVER BLAZE section has a sidebar on Victorian horse racing; etc.. A lengthy, concluding chapter details 'The World of Sherlock Holmes' with information on the Victorian world, the art of deduction, Forensic science, Crime Writing and Detective Fiction, Holmes fans, Holmes on the stage/screen/TV, etc. The book was written by Holmes authority David Stuart Davies and five other contributors.

The book is wonderfully illustrated with vintage and contemporary b&w and color photographs, illustrations, posters, magazine/book cover artwork and diagrams. Visually, the book is a delight.

In short, Holmes fans of all ages are in for a treat. THE SHERLOCK HOLMES BOOK is a marvelous history of and tribute to that most beloved detective and his ever-dependable colleague. Highly recommended.

It is good solid info and should be helpful to most struggling in the UG position.

But this just covered one position against one other position. If the each other situation from UG will be covered in its own module it will get a little pricey by the time it is all done. However still less expensive than coaching.

Good Things Emotional Healing Journal Addiction

This book takes a smarter approach at beating addiction. Elisabeth Davies identifies addiction as a compulsive and unwanted habit. The book empowers people to manage these behaviors. If the reader can control the behavior, they can then choose to continue or not. Quitting anything is so abrupt, its like ripping the security blanket from a child; it creates insecurities and anxiety. Teaching new ways to cope with desires and compulsive thoughts is something that takes time. The reader can work at their own pace with no outside pressure. The behavior needing change was built a over time; so it may take some time to change. This book gives the reader the time and the results they need in the privacy they may be looking for. Great book, Great approach!.

AMAZING

As a former Addiction Counselor, I would welcome a workbook that is very personal, and informative as well as very client oriented. The exercises are client friendly, and produce self thought in all areas of the recovery process. When a client has something such as this workbook to refer to during their recovery, it makes an already tough process a little easier and with greater chance of success.
I would recommend anyone in this field to get this book and share it with their clients.

Excellent

I've completed this book 3 times now and it is amazing. I've done extensive counseling with the author, Elisabeth Davies, and I cannot describe in words what Elisabeth does. She is very knowledgeable and has dedicated her life's work to helping others. This book is cognitive behavioral based and spiritual based to help people recover step by step from their addictions or struggles (as it did me). Elisabeth does hold a Masters in Psychology and has done her research and first hand experience so this book is factual. I recommend this book for anyone who is looking to better their life. Also, I recommend getting in touch with the author as she is one of the nicest and most helpful people on the face of earth.

I consider Thomas Jefferson to be one of earliest masters of gardening-among other things. So any book relating to his life and works is worth owning. I thank the publishers for taking a chance and printing up these chapters for the general public to be able to view and use. Truly Handy Collection Of Great Amercian Documents`

In John Grafton's edited book of great documents of American History, he provides an uniquely handy reference book to the great speeches and documents of our past. Included are both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, with all Amemdments, a document I often find myself in need of referencing, especially in these tumultuous times.
I will not list off all the documents in his book, the Amazon review and several reader reviews do list them. But I would note, that Grafton's commentary on Lincoln's composition of the Gettysburgh Address is in accord with the superb work of Gary Wills in his book, "Lincoln At Gettysburgh" where Wills thoroughly debunks the myth that Lincoln wrote the Address on the back of an envelope on his way up on the train.
Anyone who has frequent need to reference some of the greatest and enduring documents in American History will find this book an invaluable reference tool.

A solid collection of key documents

"The Declaration of Independence and Other Great Documents of American History, 1775-1865," edited by John Grafton, is a fine collection of important texts. The editor has produced a compact but meaty book of just under 100 pages.
The texts included are as follows: Patrick Henry's "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" speech; the Declaration of Independence; the Constitution (with all 27 Amendments); "The Federalist" #10; George Washington's First Inaugural and Farewell Addresses; Thomas Jefferson's First Inaugural Address; the Monroe Doctrine; William Lloyd Garrison's prospectus for "The Liberator," an anti-slavery periodical; Andrew Jackson's 1832 Bank Bill veto; Abraham Lincoln's First and Second Inaugural Addresses; the Emancipation Proclamation; and the Gettysburg Address.
These are critical documents, and it is excellent to have them together in a compact volume. I think the book would have been enhanced, however, with the inclusion of a few texts by women or ethnic minorities: perhaps one of Abigail Adams' insightful letters to her husband, an article from abolitionist David Walker's "Appeal," or an excerpt from the writings of pioneering Native American writer William Apess. Certainly texts like these reflect (to quote from the Introduction) "the ideas, issues, and conflicts which dominated American political life in those first nine decades." Still, this is a fine anthology, and I recommend it both for classroom use and individual reading.

Slim, but Powerful

This is a quick and slim collection of founding American documents. Being small it fits anywhere, on your shelf or in the schoolbag. Get it for Poli. Sci. students, Law Students, and Historians, or for you patriotic friend for the Fourth of July or Patriot Day.
It has the basics that every American needs to know. It has the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, plus speeches form Washington, Jefferson, Jackson, Lincoln, and the Gettysburg Address. You get a good feel for the movers and shakers at this nations founding.
Ignorance is an unpardonable sin. We need to understand the past to understand the present. We need to get back to these ancient and sacred writings to understand our country. They are a trustworthy and reliable source of information about who we are.
There are several omissions. I would have like to have the Mayflower Compact included. The Monroe Doctrine was also missing-terrible shame! I would have also to have the Northwest Ordinance. Furthermore, it would be helpful to have the Articles of Confederation. The Constitution only makes sense in context of the mistakes of the Articles of Confederation. Lastly, I would have included more from the Federalist Papers, such as 1, 2,13, 14, 55 and 84. But this would have bloated the book, thus loosing it's slim effectiveness.
Maybe they could put all of this in a Volume II.

About the Author
Douglas Medin (Ph.D., University of South Dakota) taught at Rockefeller University, University of Illinois, and University of Michigan before assuming his position as CAS Visiting Committee Research and Teaching Professor at Northwestern University. Best known for his research on concepts and categorization, his recent research interests have extended to decision making and cross-cultural and development studies of categorization and reasoning. He teaches courses in cognitive psychology, psychology of thinking, decision making, and culture cognition. He has been editor of the journal Cognitive Psychology and currently edits the Academic Press Psychology of Learning and Motivation series.

Brian Ross received an S.B. in psychology from Brown University and an M.A. from Yale University before receiving his Ph.D. from Stanford University. His teaching career has been at the University of Illinois, where he is Professor of Psychology at the Beckman Institute. His research has examined issues in categorization, problem solving, learning, and memory, and he was associate editor of the journal Memory and Cognition. He teaches courses in cog nitive psychology, the psychology of thinking, problem solving, mathematical models of memory, and introductory statistics.

Arthur Markman received his M.A. and Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Illinois after completing his S.B. in cognitive science at Brown University. He worked at Northwestern University and Columbia University before moving to the University of Texas at Austin, where he is an associate professor in the psychology department. He teaches courses in cognitive psychology, research methods and statistics, cognitive science, and knowledge representation, and he supervises the honors program. His research has explored similarity, categorization, and decision making. His book, Knowledge Representation, was published in 1999.
