Goes without saying

What a wonderful idea to write a book about what everyone thinks goes without saying! It needs to be said. Practical things like keeping your floors clean and being on time are essential if you want the people attending your yoga classes to keep coming back as it's far cheaper to hold on to a customer than to find a new one. These practicalities, however, are probably not included in all yoga teacher trainings.
On top of the basic facts Gudjon Bergmann adds bits and pieces on how you can make it work for you, like how you can turn doing the floors into a spiritual practise or what you can do during the time slot between arriving early and when the class starts. With that understanding doing the "chores" becomes a win-win situation.
I have tried most of the things in this book for my yoga teaching and I strongly recommend it. Some of the things have also proved to be very useful for other teaching I do and for my work as a wholistic practitioner.

The first time I met the author, Yogi Shanti Desai, I did not know the meaning of Yoga, nor did I know the many types of Yoga. I had already begun to teach myself some asanas, but I did not know their value. The benefits of practice reach deeply into the various parts of the body and then to the interior of one's being. I felt the benefits at last, when I read and used this practice manual. I learned to visualize each movement before I practiced. The pictures in the Practice Manual help the student of Yoga to choose and visualize which set of routines he or she wants to use each day. Visualization of the (Asanas) or positions, are accompanied by breathing exercises which offer benefits that are clearly explained. Knowing and seeing these provide more senses for appreciation of each movement and its effect produced in the body. (First Printing, 1978)

A work of monumental importance

This is a difficult book to digest for faithful Roman Catholics like myself. It is the story of a wonderful priest who loved the poor and wanted the church to improve the quality of life for Catholics. Pope John Paul the First was a man who would not seek to impose christian solutions on non-Christians; he was someone who was sensitive to social problems and open to dialogue; with a commitment to the search for unity; a good pastor, a good shepherd in the way that Jesus was; a man who sincerely believed that the church should not be out of date but be a relevant, nurturing factor in the lives of Catholics worldwide.
The press called him the "Smiling Pope." However, in reality Albino Luciani who wished to be called Pope John Paul the First and became the first double name in the history of the papacy was a man of enormous faith. What a shame his 33 days as pope in 1978 was the shortest stint since Pope Medici Leo XI in 1605 who only served 17 days. In all likelihood, he had the inner strength and intelligence to be the greatest pope in the history of the Vatican.
To this end, "In God's Name: An Investigation into the Murder of Pope John Paul I," by highly regarded journalist David A.Yallop is a work of monumental research and importance. The author dares to point a finger at the financial corruption within the Vatican. He names names...Michele Sindona, Roberto Calvi, Lucio Gelli, Cardinal John Patrick Cody of Chicago and Bishop Paul Casimir Marcinkus in Vatican City all coducted illegal activities. And Albino Luciani was determined to put an end to it.
This well-written book is difficult to put down. Quite naturally it is officially condemned by the oligarchy in the Vatican. However, I think it is important for all interested in the pursuit of truth to read this compelling book and drawn one's own conclusion. The evidence is hard to ignore. The conclusion is based on facts. It is truly hard to imagine but I am know convinced that Pope John Paul the First was murdered because he dared to promote positive change and rid the Vatican of corrupt banking practices. Highly recommended.

God's Justice and Man's Transformation

Jonathan Sacks is a master teacher and provides deep insights into our current state of identity and our search for meaning as humans.

Religious hate and violence are discussed and Sacks says it is the inner violence that if expressed has the power to destroy a society. We need to let go of hate - first in the battlefield of our mind. To be cured of potential violence toward others, we must imagine ourselves as the Other and search for the trace of God in the face of the Other. To violence, God is saying: Not in My Name.

Genesis is the foundational book of Abrahamic monotheism and this book uses many examples from Genesis, from the history of the Jewish people, and from the Hebrew Bible. Sacks helps us to see deeper meanings in the stories and counter-stories. The stories contain themes of sibling rivalry, role reversal, transformation, and reconciliation.

In the last chapter, Sacks has specific answers to address religious hate and violence. Here is one: we must strive to honor God's name by honoring his image - humankind.

Sacks discusses our inner struggle within the soul, our identity, our search for a life with meaning, and the tension between love and justice. This discussion is done under the backdrop of religion, history, sociology, philosophy, and psychological insight into relationships including sibling rivalry, rejection, victimhood, scapegoat, and reconciliation.

Sacks is an excellent communicator of ideas (religious and secular). This book is recommended.

No certain proof, but revealing.

This book gives a terrible tarnished picture of the Vatican, even if the author is wrong and there was no murder or active murder (they could have let Pope John Paul I die, by not administering him his medicine).
A Vatican controlled by a bunch of corrupt, merciless, avid for power, 'holy' cardinals (Villot, Cody, Marcinkus, Baggio), implicated in a web of depraved banking, masonic and Mafia figures like Calvi, Gelli and Sindona. (I recommend for the 'banking' part also the book by Richard Hammer 'The Vatican Connection').
What is also intriguing, or should I say 'demonic', is the fact that the next pope didn't remove anybody entangled in these murky affairs from his office.
The author gives also very plausible hints why, besides personal career interests, there were moral (the issue of birth control, for instance) and financial (money laundering to help friendly unions or parties) motives.
A devastating book. Not to be missed.

In the first volume of a projected trilogy, Okihiro, professor of international and public affairs at Columbia, largely succeeds in a radical approach to historiography as applied to Hawaii. He defies the standard linear progression and view of humans as subjects with volition without regard for the agencies of other life-forms.... Okihiro combines human history, natural history and mythic Hawaiian folklore with interpretations of how Hawaiian cultural artifacts (such as surfboards) infiltrated American culture and vice versa. He likewise depicts the lives of Hawaiians who wound up in North America, either by choice or involuntarily. In young islanders taken to be Westernized at special schools, Okihiro sees a parallel to similar cultural cleansing (or schooling for subservience) of Native Americans. He also narrates the slow decimation of the rich and varied Hawaiian musical tradition reduced to clichés, à la Don Ho. Fresh and Welcome Perspective

Often, when historians analyze the history of what we label an "island," we analyze the impact of continental political forces upon the island and its culture. Gary Okihiro has taken the opposite approach in his book Island World. The people of the Hawaiian Islands brought historical and cultural meanings to the U.S. In contrast to the "civilized" Western view of the world, which divides the Earth into continents and seeks to manipulate the meanings and functions of nature through science, the Polynesian peoples of the Pacific, in Okihiro's estimation, were (are) one with nature and their water civilization. For the peoples of the Pacific, history and geography do not occur within the Western imaginary confines of the continent and nation-state. Rather, all lands upon the Earth are, in a sense, islands, moving upon and connected with the massive plates that create the Earth's crust. Thus, Okihiro presents a multi-faced, fluid approach to world history, through the lens of the Hawaiian people, where cultures impact other cultures regardless of Westernized conceptions of geographic location. Okihiro analyzes these cultural exchanges through stories of religion, music, gender, film, education, travel, war and literature.

Okihiro's opening chapter provides a poetic, organic and feminine view of the land and sea that is Hawai'i. Earth is power to be revered and worshiped in Hawaiian social existence, as Hawaiians view themselves as a product of their environment, of volcanic birth. The Pele story, Okihiro claims, shows that "the volcanic fire-queen," like the Polynesian people of the Pacific, was unfettered by notions of time and space. Rather, Hawaiians, like their Polynesian descendants, lived in "a land not rooted and anchored to one spot, but [a land] that floated free" (22). Moreover, the peoples of the Pacific, coming to life and living in a volcanic geography, had indigenous roots that few cultures or peoples on Earth could relate to. As Okihiro shows for the remainder of his tome, such an existence and history had (has) much to offer U.S. culture and society. However, Western society sought to engage the feminine origins of Hawaii and its people with the masculine approach of imperialism.

Polynesian culture, specifically Hawaiian culture, clashed with white, Christian European and American paternalistic values and ambitions. Foreign visitors viewed the Hawaiian Islands themselves in the framework of Western scientific rationalizations rather than Hawaiian cultural realities. For example, volcanoes held religious, metaphoric life meanings for Hawaiians while Europeans typically saw only natural beauty through the lens of science. One American painter describes the Crater of Kilauea as one "I shall always think of as a piece of a dead world" (39). In another example, Okihiro characterizes the American bombing of Mauna Loa to divert its lava flow as "an assault against and desecration of the sacred earth, the gods and ancestors, and the Hawaiians" (41).

Okihiro provides numerous examples of the cultural exchange emanating from Hawaii toward the U.S. Surfing, a center of Hawaiian social and religious life, had a profound impact not only on American social life, but also upon its film and music industries. Hawaiian music was highly sought after in the 1920's U.S. and influenced blues and country music as well. Hawaiians served with U.S. forces during the War of 1812 and with Union forces during the American Civil War. Hawaiians were also actively engaged in gold mining and speculation in California after 1848. In essence, "the island acted upon and moved the continent" (211).

Perhaps most important are Okihiro's depictions and perceptions of U.S. missionary culture, race and gender in relation to Hawaiians. The Second Great Awakening initiated a creation of and large flow of missionary societies that sought to "civilize heathen societies." Although abolitionism and temperance found their roots in this religious movement, the movement itself still contained racial and gender driven motivations, as Okihiroi makes clear in his analysis of the missionary, "educational" work of Samuel Armstrong. Hawaiian citizens and immigrants were often treated in the same light as Native and Black Americans. White Americans were often chastised for or forbidden from miscegenation. Moreover, schools were created to assimilate non-white cultures, and hence eviscerate their indigenous identities.

This social movement coincided with the expansion of the U.S. marketplace in a westward trajectory, with capitalist entrepreneurs seeking to monopolize the fur and sugar trade across the Pacific. By the late 19th century, social constructs of manliness that had emasculated Native American societies throughout the century, sought to emasculate non-white, indigenous peoples, including Hawaiians (and islands themselves), across the Pacific while simultaneously proving white manliness through imperialization. This was, indeed, the so-called "White Man's Burden."

Urban History

What Ulrich Bonnell Phillips and Kenneth Stampp did for plantation slavery, Richard C. Wade has done for urban slavery. This is a classic work on how slaves adapted to urban life and found some bit of solace from the pecular institution by working in cities. Professon Wade explains how slaves worked as carpenters, metal workers, painters, and numerous other jobs to earn income for their masters and themselves. The city changed the character of slavery by giving slaves some choices and flexibility in mixing with the urban environment. Slaves could earn extra income and demonstrate their skills in the city. They also learned that city living expanded their economic and social relations. If you want some insights on the intelligence and adaptability of urban slaves then read this book.

I was asked to read an ARC of this book prior to its release. While Jodi Vaughn is a paranormal romance writer, she proves with Saddle Up she can write any sub-genre of romance with ease. Swoon-worthy cowboy, Derrek Diaz, wants to make his ranch a success, but has no desire to have a successful romance after being burned by the town rich girl. Nurse Emily Smith leaves the big city of Dallas for the anonymity of the small town known as Somewhere, after an emotionally abusive ex-boyfriend destroys her heart and her credit. Broken ribs after a drunken fall off his horse brings Derrek into the Emergency Room during Emily's shift. She only wants to heal his ribs and he only wants to help a damsel in financial distress. Soon their attraction is too much for either to resist and both nurse and cowboy are nursing one another's hearts with the healing power of love. Jodi Vaughn's love stories make this new author a must read for everyone fan of to-die for heroes and the women who win their hearts.

Okay enough read

Was a typical romance story, two burned by romance persons finding each other. It was a simple read. Not a lot with the relationship building or character building really. It was just there. Then it was just done.
What I had issue with in this story - If you're going to have a story that has basis in reality, then have scenarios that makes sense.
Why would a hospital who takes care of their employees continue to allow rental of an apartment complex from a man who is as despicable as this landlord was? Don't see it happening.
Nor can he kicked her out before her lease is up. He does not have the legal ability to do so.
The bank calling and disclosing Emily's business to her boyfriend is a breach of confidentiality. No bank in Dallas is going to disclose that kind of information over the phone to anyone but Emily or her husband, not a boyfriend.
It also is not reality that the bank person would say that there could be no payment arrangements. That's just bull crap. The bank would have no choice but to not only except the money that she did save up, but to also accept payment in the form of arrangements. They could take it to court, likely have to go through mediation first, and they would lose the argument against accepting payments.
This same bank person, who disclosed Emily's private information over the phone, then says she can't tell Emily who paid off her loan because it is private? Seriously?

Emily Smith was forced to start a new life after the man she loved betrayed her. Somewhere, TX is the place she chose to begin again. Being a nurse she meets Derrek Diaz when he comes in after falling off his horse. Due to her past problems she is in desperate need of a place to live. Overhearing her difficulty Derrek offers his place as a way for her to help nurse his ribs. When their feelings for each other goes beyond nurse and patient Derrek steps in to help Emily out of the problem from her past hoping that she'll want a future with him.

Okay treatment of the subject---but not a complete reference on it....

Its okay, but chiefly devoted to schematics. A little Mcguiverish info on: home, low tech and expedient gunsmithing would have been nice. If you are interested in the subject, dont count on this book singularly to give you the information you need. Otherwise, I should say that the schematics look good and make sense.

Good Drawings, Complex Design

This book contains the best drawings I've seen in a book of this type. The problem with the book is the design does not give up any complexity in an effort to tailor towards home manufacture. In other words, it might as well be a set of nice drawings for some other, more proven design such as a Uzi. OK, maybe it is somewhat easier to make than a Uzi, but it does have a large number of parts to make and they don't look outstandingly simple individually. It is probably not something you can make without a lot of skill and some machine tools. I guess it is more a book for a well-organized resistance movement than an individual working in his own basement, so the cover's words "do-it-yourself" and "homemade" are basically going to be lies for most folks. Still, it is not a bad book to have for study. Oh, the book is all metric, by the way. Conversion per se is simple enough, but if it calls for metric tubing for the starting material and only inch tubing is available you need to have an extra helping of good judgement to make all other the changes necessary.
