A fascinating expert look at Israel’s meteoric rise in the global economy — with timely hints for a world reeling from financial crisis
Start-Up Nation addresses the trillion-dollar question: How is it that Israel — a country of 7.1 million, surrounded by enemies, in a constant state of war, with no natural resources — produces more start-up companies than large, peaceful nations like Canada, Japan, China, India, and the U.K.? With the savvy of foreign policy insiders, Senor and Singer examine Israeli culture and government to reveal the secrets behind the world’s first ever “start-up nation.” As countries across the globe restart their own economies, and as businesses try to re-energize their entrepreneurial spirit, we can all look to Israel for some impressive, surprising clues.

From Publishers Weekly
Hampered by an Arab nation boycott that makes regional trade impossible and endowed with precious little by way of natural resources, Israel has beaten the odds to become a major player in the global business world, especially in the technology sector. With the highest number of startups per capita of any nation in the world and massive venture capital investment, Israel is one of the world's entrepreneurship hubs. Senor, senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, and Singer (Confronting Jihad) track Israel's economic prowess using a number of factors, including the social networks and leadership training provided by Israel's mandatory military and reserve service, a culture of critique fostered by centuries of Jewish tradition and an open immigration policy for Jews that continually restocks Israel's population with motivated people from around the world—all of which foster a business climate in which risk is embraced and good ideas are given a chance to grow. The authors ground their analysis in case studies and interviews with some of Israel's most brilliant innovators to make this a rich and insightful read not just for business leaders and policy makers but for anyone curious about contemporary Israeli culture. A brilliant analysis of Israel's economic miracle.
By John V. Baumgold
A trenchant analysis of Israel's economic miracle. Particularly innovative and creative is their exposition of the role of nicknames in contemporary Israeli culture. We have "Bibi" (Netanyahu), "Bu`zi" Hertzog, "Raful" (Rafael Eitan) "Bayge" (Shochat) and "Gandi" (Zeevy); not to mention "Teddy" (Koleck) "Golda" (Meyerson) and of course "B-G" (Ben-Gurion).
Israel is the land of endless informality where people go to weddings wearing jeans the parliament passed a by law forbidding its members from appearing at parliamentary sessions in short pants. They said nothing about wearing sandals. These nicknames (which are an integral part of Israeli culture) lend an air of easy acquaintance, contact and availability - everybody knows everybody. Senor and Singer argue that this norm of nicknames enables information in organizations to go from the "bottom" to the "top" and not exclusively from "top" to "bottom". This enables crucial information to get to the decision makers and correction of policy based on information from members of the organization who are at the front lines. In more formal organizational structures this pattern of information going from the "bottom" to the "top" is seen as whistleblowing, "bucking the system" and insubordination.

Panegyric but engrossing
By yusuf
Startup Nation reveals aspects about Israel's economy, zeitgeist and history in an interwoven manner that is quite engrossing. It underlines the same formula which has worked in Silicon Valley i.e. Academic excellence plus risk taking plus Government contracts or funding. But the role of the Israeli military in tech entrepreneurship is quite unique and surprising because normally the strong hierarchical structure and risk aversion of militaries is considered at loggerheads with an entrepreneurial mindset. The Israeli defence forces apparently encourage continual change and challenge if not iconoclasm, which suits innovation. The book also serves as a hortatory promotion of the state of Israel, it's ethos, raisin d'ĂȘtre, and policies, which is unabashedly biased; that does not detract however from the often fascinating and hopefully important and useful insights.

How Israel Started a VC Industry
By J. Milanette
This is an excellent description of the motivations for establishing a finance industry in Israel and how it affected the growth of new companies in the country. It is well documented, gives excellent insight into the development of a venture industry, Israel's national business incubator program, and integration of the military and business communities into a highly interdependent community. It's well written and holds one's attention throughout.
