Vincent Bumgarner has been designing software for over 20 years, working with many languages on nearly as many platforms. He started using Splunk in 2007 and has enjoyed watching the product evolve over the years. While working for Splunk, he has helped many companies train dozens of users to drive, extend, and administer this extremely flexible product. At least one person in every company he has worked with has asked for a book, and he hopes that this book will help fill their shelves.

James D. Miller is an IBM-certified, accomplished senior engagement leader and application / system architect / developer / integrator with over 35 years of extensive application and system design and development experience. He has held positions such as National FPM practice leader, certified solutions expert, technical leader, technical instructor, and best practice evangelist. His experience includes business intelligence, predictive analytics, web architecture and design, business process analysis, GUI design and testing, data and database modeling and systems analysis, design, and development of applications, systems and models based on cloud, client/server, web and mainframe. His responsibilities have included all aspects of solution design and development, including business process analysis and reengineering, requirement documentation, estimating and planning/management of projects, architectural evaluation and optimization, test preparation, and the management of resources. Other experience includes the development of ETL infrastructures―such as data transfer automation between mainframe (DB2, Lawson, Great Plains, and so on) systems and the client/server model-based SQL server―web-based applications, and the integration of enterprise applications and data sources. In addition, he has acted as an Internet application development manager and was responsible for the design, development, QA, and delivery of multiple websites, including online trading applications, warehouse process control and scheduling systems, and administrative and control applications. Mr. Miller was also responsible for the design, development, and administration of a web-based financial reporting system for a $450-million organization, reporting directly to the CFO and his executive team. In various other leadership roles, such as project and team leader, lead developer, and applications development director, Mr. Miller has managed and directed multiple resources using a variety of technologies and platforms. James has authored IBM Cognos TM1 Developer's Certification Guide and Mastering Splunk, both by Packt Publishing and a number of whitepapers on best practices, such as Establishing a Center of Excellence. He continues to post blogs on a number of relevant topics based on personal experiences and industry best practices. First and foremost let me say I enjoyed the first book and was very excited to purchase this book on the
expectations that this would surpass it. I was not disappointed the book delves into the extensive concepts of
Big Data and intelligence gathering concepts used in the real world, that said I have one extensive criticism and that
would be the instructions given on setting up the tutorial data. The Event generator is not really windows friendly and instructions
are not quite clear on setting it up... the instructions given do not work within windows as given and I suppose were only tested in a Linux
environment. It would help immensely if the Writers could address this issue with a solution for windows installs concerning the event generator propagated by Splunk making sure step by step instructions are given to make the data work with Splunk. Much easier to work with examples in book.

Great getting started guide for Splunk

This massive volume (clocking in at over 450 pages!) is easily one of the better IT books I've read in the past few years. Although its called Implementing Splunk it DOES NOT cover installing the software. Check the documentation for that. What it does cover is getting started with using the software, and working towards more in-depth scenarios and configurations so you can handle a wider variety of data, with better dashboards and visualizations. I think one of the best parts of this book is the number of screenshots with clearly marked emphasis on the areas that the author is referring to in the text. That in itself makes following the text much easier, since you aren't hunting around trying to find the setting, menu or piece of information, but you can immediately see it. Need touch!

Deep, Honest, and Thoughtful

If the idea of this book even remotely interests you, I think you'll be very satisfied with the experience. There are insights here that will appeal to many different people. And, some things that seem awkward or strange. I saw these as moments when two people discussing such a complicated topic differ in the personal expressions and emotional reactions experienced. It feels honest because of this, and makes it seem OK to share a range of thoughts and reactions with others as well. I'm new to this type of book, and thought it was a great introduction.

Don't waste your time or $2.00

This is not a book - it is barely an article! It's a "how-to pussy foot around your abusive OCPD "partner". Nothing in this piece of garbage mentions the OCPD person recognizing, changing, or taking responsibility for some level of control over their behavior. If I were to believe what very little J.B. Snow has to say, I would feel terribly hopeless. I would not waste my money or time on any of her kindle "books" on the subject. Just ridiculous.

Do yourself a favor -

Although this translation is concise and contained in one volume, the Penguin Books publication of this work (in that version, titled first as "Story of the Stone") is an infinitely better translation - the poetry is kept intact and the story is in full, instead of condensed for speed. In addition, the maids - who frequently outnumber the mistresses and masters in the plot line - are introduced to the reader with names in English, which makes the story a little easier to follow.
If you really like this story and have not read the unabridged version, please do yourself a favor and find the Penguin publications. I love this novel, but there are better translations.

A wonderful novel

The 18th century novel, Hongloumeng, remains the greatest Chinese novel ever written, unsurpassed in its depiction of individuals and families, human striving, and stellar literary values. It may be read on many levels, as a love story or social history, as a philosophical musing on the futility of human existence, and a repository of Chinese artistic and literary values. The translation under review is a sharply abridged version that advances the plot line by eliminating many of the minor characters, most of the poetry, and a great deal of the detailed descriptions of daily life in an upper class Chinese family. Those seeking a full appreciation of the novel, especially its literary value, should turn to the full translation, which goes by the title Story of the Stone. However, the full complete translation is a multivalued piece, almost 2,000 pages in length. What you get with this translation is a good feel for the main characters, especially the love triangle, and for the social dynamics within the family. The result in a lovely read that will inspire you to compare this abridge version with a fuller version to see what you missed. I still use this translation in my history courses, but I use it for social history. My colleagues in literature prefer to use volume 1 of the Story of the Stone for their classes.

A very drastic abridgement of an already-abridged translatio

Chi-Chen Wang published an abridged translation of "Dream of the Red Chamber" (also known as "A Dream of Red Mansions" and "The Story of the Stone") in 1929; in 1958 he extensively expanded and revised his translation, to about 550 pages in length. This is only a fraction of the Chinese text, which runs more than three times this length. The next year, Anchor (a subsidiary of Doubleday, which is now owned by Bantam) published this translation in paperback -- but had abridged it, to less than 300 pages! It's a very skillful translation, but a more drastic abridgement than the publisher acknowleges.
I would look at the Penguin edition (translated as "The Story of the Stone," in five volumes) or the edition published by the Chinese Government (translated as "A Dream of Red Mansions," in three volumes) rather than this one.
