The Mosaic Decoration of San Marco, Venice, by Otto Demus

Decorated with the richest, most beautiful mosaics in the world, the Venetian church of San Marco is quite literally a treasure house of medieval art. The domes and walls of the church, encrusted with stone, glass, and gold, have been recognized, over the centuries, as a glorious historical and artistic record. Peopled with hundreds and figures—Adam and Eve, Noah and his progeny, Isaiah, Christ, Mark, of course, and other holy men and women of Venice—these mosaics create a cosmic panorama. The Mosaic Decoration of San Marco, Venice brings these unrivaled mosaics into breathtaking focus, combining a descriptive history of their creation and repair over the ages with close-up photographs revealing their iconographic detail.

From the Back Cover
This book edited by Herbert Kessler for a popular audience, distills Demus's lifelong study of San Marco. It chronicles each stage in the gestation of the beloved church-the handiwork of Greek artists and the contributions of local mosaicists from the eleventh to the thirteenth century and the misguided attempts to refashion and repair it after the fifteenth century.

excellent photo prints, very well organized, insightful views
By designered@earthlink.net
The author organizes his thoughts of the Venetian mosaics on a room by room basis. Insightful comparisons are made with other eras of mosaic cultures. An excellent book for students of mosaic art who want to study this particular, worthy genre.
Perhaps the book's strongest appeal is the choice of color plates (photographs) the author chose to include in this book. All color plates are reproduced in a stunning high qualty for the price you pay. The number of color plates, however, are somewhat limited and leave you hungry for more. Perhaps that's caused by the subject matter. Overall, I'm very satisfied with this purchase.

Messages wake you up as to what your possibilities might be.
By A Customer
This manual presents to the reader, how they can improve their life. This isn't the standard "how to" manual; it deals with becoming aware of how you perceive in your everyday life. It indicates that those perceptions are founded on many of your past experiences (upbringing, and personal history etc.). The manual indicates that you cannot change whats happened, but it does indicate that your daily perceptions don't have to be based on that history ("content"). After reading this manual, the reader has a foundation to change how they perceive themself and thereby, their possibilities. Individuals who have read this manual or who have attended Lifespring training, are identified and have expressed what has changed in their lives. I have read this manual several times and have also taken Lifesprings training. My life has changed dramatically. I of course occasionally drift back to how I used to perceive everything, but more-so-than-not, I apply the this manuals messages daily. I cannot over rate this manual.

Ten years later....
By Tracy A. Batwinas
I bought this book 10 years ago, and as much as I love books, I can't think of any other book that I have on my book shelf that has lasted as long as this one!

I purchased the book soon after I did the Lifespring trainings, and the book has been a great way for me to always learn something new, as well as a reminder for me of lessons learned but forgotten.

Not very many people realize it, but the Lifespring trainings are still going on today.

For more information about them, visit [...]

The book also offers small vignettes where someone who has done at least one of the workshops will share about how they've used these principles in their lives.

Overall, I thought it was all pretty neat!

As a former "student" of Lifespring process I felt that the book gives a lot of information that intelectually supports what goes on in the workshop. I recommend you do the workshop before you read the book.
I am very happy with the results for the workshop in my life and the contents of the book only come to show that it is a good option for life.

Profit and Power: A Study of England and the Dutch Wars, by Charles Wilson

Historical explanations need to keep step with the march of research if they are not to degenerate into empty cliches. It has long been a commonplace of 17th century history that the Anglo-Dutch Wars were the product of 'commercial rivalry'. This essay, first published twenty years ago, attempted to analyse and redefine this overworked traditional concept so as to explain more precisely how it led to naval wars between the Dutch and the English. Two idees fixes of contemporary English thought seemed especially significant; one was the persistent consciousness of English inferiority and backwardness in economic affairs when compared with the Dutch; the other, compounding this, was the equally persistent conviction that strategically, England seemed well placed to wreck the Dutch maritime economy and bring the Republic to her knees in a naval war. These obsessive beliefs combined naturally with the specific influences and motives of powerful political and commercial lobbies to stoke the fires of aggression. Failing over several decades to make any visible progress by more or less peaceful policies, they turned, first, to economic warfare by means of propaganda and pseudo-legal claims to maritime sovereignty; finally (in 1652) to all-out eco nomic and naval warfare.

“It’s a beautiful house.” Leslie Barnes turned regretfully from the panorama before her. The early lights of winter dusk twinkled below her, and on a clear day, she knew, the entire bay would spread out here, where now the lights of the Golden Gate made a ribbon of jewels above the fog.
Perhaps for this view she could make minor adjustments, remodel the small room off the foyer—no, there was no time or energy to spare for that. Her work must come first.
“It’s truly a lovely place, the nicest I’ve seen. But, as I told the agent when I first called, I must have a separate room or two to see my clients.”
“Clients? You’re a lawyer, Miss?”
“A psychotherapist.”
“The rooms on the ground floor—”
“I’m sorry,” Leslie repeated. Why was she apologizing? This was her business. “My sister is a student at the Conservatory, and we need room for a grand piano and a harp.”
The agent shrugged and sighed. “This place will go fast, you know. I have three people waiting to see it, and I couldn’t even guarantee I could hold it till Monday.”
“It simply isn’t large enough,” Leslie repeated. But she looked again with regret at the view she would have loved to live with.
The agent saw her regretful look and pressed on. “Look, one of the people considering this house is a family with three teenage kids; that little room we showed you, they’re going to put two girls in there and let the boy have the attic room. You take the little downstairs room off the garage for your patients, and the piano can go in the living room—” He was sounding like a reasonable man beset by a silly woman who didn’t know what she wanted, and when Leslie shook her head he said, “Well, lady, I think you’re making a big mistake, I really don’t have anything else to show you. That place on Geary, maybe—”
“No parking; besides, I can’t live in a place where neither Emily nor I will dare step outside after dark.”
He shrugged. “Well, if we get anything, I’ll call you. But you’re not going to find anything bigger than this, unless you’re talking about half a million dollars.”
The unspoken part of that, you’re too fussy, stayed with her as she went to her car and watched the agent drive off in his. But she had a right to be fussy; it was the house she would live in, perhaps forever. She could not afford to move again within ten years. And she was not sure marriage was for her, in spite of Joel—
Her thoughts ran a familiar track. If he could get it through his head that her work was important to her, as important as his law career, not just a stopgap until Mister Right came along. She stopped herself.
She was always telling her clients not to enter any serious relationship with the idea of changing the other party. She could accept Joel as he was, marry him and live with him that way, or she could refuse him. But he wasn’t going to change, or if he did it would be for his own reasons which had nothing to do with her.
In any case she must build her home with the assumption that she would live in it for years. San Francisco was necessary; she could no longer live in the East Bay, with Emily at the Conservatory. The long commute every day by public transit was expensive and took up precious time as well as draining energy Emily needed for practice.
Maybe, she thought, as she turned onto the skyway approach to the Bay Bridge, she was too fussy; the piano could have gone in the living room—she would, after all, have been down with her clients half the day or more. The little room downstairs off the garage would have made an office, with some remodeling; at worst she could have found office space somewhere outside. In any case it would have been no worse than the rented apartment, cramped even for one, and since Emily had joined her, bulging at the seams with her office and Emily’s piano. The harp was still in storage.
And how could she, with the small amount of family money coming from her grandmother, who had for a short time been a concert harpist and recording artist, afford anything more spacious than that little jewel on Russian Hill? Emily’s share was earmarked for the Conservatory, and even so Leslie would probably have to help her before she was through. But at whatever cost they must have a place with space for them both; Emily was already chafing at the necessary rule that she could not practice until the last client had left for the day.
She had a good counseling practice, though not as good as it could have been; she still set her fees on a sliding scale based on ability to pay, instead of doing as her colleagues insisted she should do: charging what the traffic would bear. Counseling, they said truthfully, was a luxury service, and the higher fees were set, the higher the therapist’s reputation. How much good had she really done with the school counseling, which was just part of the system, which she had doled out in Sacramento—
Leslie felt she had a singular rapport with disturbed teenagers. She had been cheated out of her own adolescent rebellion; when the whole world, it seemed, had been rebelling, everything from protest marches to pot, she had been working hard to survive, put herself through graduate school, and was already fighting Emily’s battle for freedom. Their mother had successfully forced Leslie into taking a position as a school counselor instead of opening her own office as a therapist; and now their mother was determined that Emily’s talent could be best served by earning a certificate to teach music. The idea of Emily teaching in the chaos of the public schools was rather like imagining Secretariat hauling a coal cart. Or more accurately, Leslie thought, visualizing her high-strung and highly gifted sister giving music lessons, Maria Callas as a high school basketball coach.
She had resolved that Emily should have her chance, even if it meant she herself must spend her life teaching. The inheritance had come too late for a normal adolescence or carefree college days for Leslie; but it meant freedom for Emily. And the scandal which had driven Leslie out of the public school system had at least freed them both. Her mother, Leslie reflected bitterly, had been glad to see her go. But she would never forgive her for taking Emily away.
Leslie cursed as a huge double-trailered semi truck cut into her lane of traffic, remembering the headlines splashed across the National Enquirer.
PSYCHIC TEACHER LOCATES BODY OF MISSING SCHOOLGIRL!
PIGTAIL KILLER TRAPPED BY PSYCHIC!
A fluke, Leslie reminded herself. Everybody had a psychic flash now and then. She clenched her teeth, gripping the wheel…the traffic was heavy; she had hoped to be back before rush hour traffic built up on the Bay Bridge; there must be an accident on the Bridge. She concentrated fiercely on the crawling car ahead, trying not to see again before her eyes the flash of Juanita García’s body in the drainage ditch, covered with blood, long hair tightly braided by the killer who had raped and mutilated four young girls.
No, she would not remember that. She had a different life now, and a different world. Joachím Mendoza, dubbed “the Pigtail Killer” for his habit of braiding the long hair of his victims, was still on Death Row. Leslie did not approve of capital punishment, but would not have lifted a hand to save his life; she had seen Juanita García’s body, had led the police there.
What if the newspapers had made a Roman holiday of the lucky hunch or psychic flash which had led to the killer? The local headlines had lasted only a day or two; Schoolteacher finds pigtail killer victim. And who ever remembered what was printed in tabloids like the Enquirer?
She had left the notoriety in Sacramento. When she relocated in San Francisco, it would be entirely behind her. If she ever found a place in San Francisco. This was the fifth house she had turned down.
She knew herself well enough to wonder why she kept finding reasons to reject every new house. The perfect house, she told herself firmly, just didn’t exist. One way or another, she would have to make up her mind to some compromises. She tried hard to dismiss her own indecision as she took the freeway exit and drove through the Berkeley streets to the tiny house she had rented when she came to Berkeley.
She pulled up and parked in the driveway. The lease here was up on May first: she didn’t want to be stuck with a lease for another year.
But she could think about that later. She was seeing a new client for the first time tonight.
Mentally she riffled through the file. Eileen Grantson. Fourteen. Disruptive behavior, temper tantrums, breaking china, lying about it, constant fights in school. Broken home; father has custody, mother remarried and living in Texas, no siblings. The girl probably had a right to be angry at the conditions of her life. It would be easier to deal with a girl already able to express her anger than one who claimed she felt none. The human mind, Leslie told herself, was a fearful and wonderful thing, and that was why she had become a therapist; because she had never lost her sense of wonder about all the things the mind could do.
Eileen Grantson was not a prepossessing teenager. Her hair was mousy and lank, eyes a pale washy blue, hidden behind thick plastic-rimmed glasses. She slumped in a chair as if her spine was made of poor-quality cardboard.
In nearly an hour she had said almost nothing; Leslie had had to extract a few admissions from her by painstaking questions. Most teenagers were all too ready to pour out all their grievances against the world.
“You get very angry with your father sometimes, don’t you, Eileen?”
“He’s crazy,” said Eileen s...

the devil is in the details

I love this book and can't believe the bad reviews it has received here. This is a modern gothic/dark romance, and perhaps not for everyone. If you like Barbara Michaels modern gothics, or Mary Stewart's Thornyhold, you'll like this. MZB builds on her knowledge of San Francisco, and puts a wealth of detail into the book, that makes you see and hear and feel the setting with the characters. I could totally relate to the main character, on her own, buying a house with a questionable history, and struggling to deal with a supernatural world thrust upon her unwanted. This is a book to curl up and relax with, and feel a little chilled at reading. MZB also considered this book at least equal to anything she'd written. It is also part of a series that begins, I believe, with Dark Satanic, and has several novels after it, but this stands well on its own.

Ghost Cats, Poltergeists, and Dark Rituals
By Beverly Diehl
Something of a modern gothic horror novel, set in San Francisco in the early 1980's, it's kind of... atmospheric and weird.

Leslie is an unwilling psychic; it's nothing she wants or can control, but occasionally she has had glimpses of missing/murdered people, and has worked with the police to help them find these people. Her day job is as a psychologist, and she is also the guardian for her 17-year old sister,a musical prodigy. Weird, unexplained things are happening, even before they move into a house previously owned by another psychologist psychic.

Some modern readers may be appalled at the immorality of Leslie dumping boyfriend A and quickly falling into bed with boyfriend B; that's just "not done" in contemporary romance these days, though as a lifestyle in the 1970's and 1980's, really no big deal, and a younger reader might be even more interested in that "taste" of the period.

My problem is that Leslie seems too willing to bend over backwards to overlook the creepiness of Simon, boyfriend B; even to him having definitely killed a cat and perhaps even murdered a junkie prostitute in a dark ritual for his own gain. Oh, and he might be willing to sacrifice the little sister, too. While I appreciate that in the end, every human being is shown as redeemable, capable of being brought into the light, and Leslie and Simon are presented as having a HEA, in some ways, that's even worse. It's a spine-tingling, suitably Halloween-y story, and well-written, but the ending doesn't feel satisfying to me.

Isn't it awful when you absolutely hate a book written by an author you actually love?
By frumiousb
I discovered MZB with the Darkover novels. While in college, I went through our backsmoker library (a dorm area for smokers where people left second-hand books) and read every single Darkover book that I could get my hands on. I also admired The Mists of Avalon, even though I occasionally make nasty remarks about it. The nasty remarks are more about the book's fans and imitators than they actually are about the book itself.

Also, through a series of circumstances which I may explain sometime. I wrote Bradley one of my only fan letters ever as a very young woman. Not only did she answer, but she included her personal telephone number in case I had any other questions. I can't tell you how much that meant to me. As a result, I feel a kind of residual loyalty to her and everything that she wrote.

But, there's no getting around it. The Inheritor is bad. It is really bad. I wanted to read something from the Colin McLaren series and this is what I picked up but oh-- now I'm dreading the thought that I have another one of these books sitting in the to-be-read pile waiting for me.

To be fair, defenders of the book say that its detractors just aren't romance fans. And that is true. I am not a romance fan. Still, Simon is way past the dangerous-hero-with-a-troubled-past. He has tortured and killed for fun and profit. And somehow we're supposed to believe in a hero who love him anyhow. It is so terribly far past anything that I could stomach or admire that Leslie becomes entirely unsympathetic. It isn't awful to have an unsympathetic main character. However, the book is written so that you can pretty clearly tell that she was supposed to be sympathetic. It troubled me.

In general, I didn't like the characters very much.

The plot also felt stiff and awkward. This is unusual for Bradley, and makes me sad. It had its lovely moments. There were some little twists and turns around the way that the ghost story plays out that struck me as very nice. It kept me reading despite my overall problems with the novel. In the hands of a lesser writer, I would have put this down very quickly.

In short, not something that I would recommend unless you already like Bradley so much that your opinion cannot be too negatively influenced.

Stranger Music: Selected Poems and Songs, by Leonard Cohen

In the decades since he recorded his first album, Leonard Cohen has evolved into an international cult figure--and one of the most literate, daring, and affecting poet-songwriters in the world. Stranger Music presents a magnificent cross-section of Cohen's work--including the legendary songs "Suzanne," "Sisters of Mercy," "Bird on a Wire," "Famous Blue Raincoat," "I'm Your Man," and "The Future"; selections from such books as Flowers for Hitler, Beautiful Losers, and Death of a Lady's Man, and eleven previously unpublished poems. This volume demonstrates definitively that Cohen is a writer of dazzling intelligence and a force that transcends genres.

From Publishers Weekly
Cohen is probably best known as the writer of the lyrics for the song "Suzanne," made famous by Judy Collins, but has written a great many other songs, too, as well as poetry and prose poetry not set to music. In reading through this generous selection, one often hears the ghost of musical accompaniment, and sometimes its actual presence is missed. The writing alone, forthright in its rhythms, plain of speech, often rhymed, and almost immediately accessible, seems well suited to the ears of a live audience. So fans of the songs will be in luck, here; but readers who prefer slow subtleties, or a kind of poetry that gradually expands in meaning on rereading, or ambitious craft, won't find it in a piece like "For Anne," which begins "With Annie gone, / Whose eyes to compare / With the morning sun?" Cohen's writing is oral in flavor, and asks us to "read" it mainly by hearing it. This works to the disadvantage of a book, where words stay put and aren't sung.

From Library Journal
To appreciate these poems, we must suspend any notions of poetry as an intellectual art form and approach this work as one would a rack of greeting cards. Rhyme abounds, frankly showing Cohen at his best because it holds his didactic nature in check. Although there are few surprises, such as the wonderful early poem "Beneath My Hands," the songs from Cohen's first album, written over 30 years ago, are still his finest displays of outrageous yet stunning imagery. The presence of woman as lover, prostitute, or slave, celebrated in these early songs, continues into his latest work, making over 400 pages seem remarkably flimsy. That these women never seem to exist as individuals will possibly offend readers with a feminist bent. Yet despite almost pornographic descriptions, this Jewish poet still will not write outG-d's name. The Buddhist element in his 1984 poetry collection, Book of Mercy , is now scarcely evident. Despite its flaws, this book is recommended for popular collections.

From Booklist
Cohen is known best as a songwriter--everyone's heard "Suzanne"--and a performer, but he is also a poet with eight collections to his credit. This fine volume brings together a great number of Cohen's striking poems and memorable song lyrics from 1956 to the present, including lyrics from his newest album, The Future, which is one his most powerful and exciting releases. Reading Cohen is just as pleasurable as listening to him, especially since his writing has an aural energy. Cohen is direct and precise, a no-fuss-no-muss sort of poet who gets the maximum meaning out of homey words and an invigorating jolt out of clashing images. By turns caustic and charming, Cohen is often caught between the magnetic poles of love and art, claiming in an early poem, "The reason I write/is to make something/as beautiful as you are." He's too experienced to be truly romantic, but he still longs for innocence and purity and frequently writes about faith and redemption. Politics creep in when Cohen muses over class differences and war, but he most often focuses on the subtle palette of emotions from loneliness to passion, bitter humor to serenity. Donna Seaman

Need to search for items better next time
By Gary Hamrick Jr.
Received the hardback when I was trying to find the paperback version. Still made a great gift though for a friend who was in the hospital at the time. I've bought and lost two copies of this book now myself now but oh well. Having discovered his work long ago in high school, I didn't stumble across this book till shortly after my college graduation. I'm glad I did.
Anyone looking to explore L. Cohen's work though cannot go wrong starting with this book. It covers the man's best known material and dozens of lesser known works as well. There is a variety of subject matters, tones, and even moods covered in Leonard Cohen's work. I would dare say there is probably something here for everyone. Really good way to expand one's knowledge of what "poetry" and "spoken word" is capable of being (and should be) for the reader, the writer, and the speaker.

Fantastic Collection & Perfect 1st Cohen Book to Buy
By Carey
-
One of my top gift items: Turn people on to this book. It is a terrific, full anthology that includes much out-of-print material. The poetry is stylistically wide in scope (from how-did-he-do that perfect to sparse, intense, free-verse); it has unique, emotionally-driven language choices, rhythm and content. Its tenor is lugubrious, and its subject matter tends toward sex and religion.

This, as opposed to his individual books of poetry: The individual books are typically short and some are wonderful -- each is very different, thus liked by different tastes. If you don't own any Cohen books, buy this first -- it's got great poems (plus clips of prose, as from "Beautiful Losers"). The chapters are laid out by book and album title (lyrics are here, too); therefore, if/when you want another book after, you will know which one. One thing I don't like about it is the change in poem titles from their originals.

This books ends when Cohen is in his 50's, at least in the previously unpublished poems at the end -- so, before the monastery part of his life, though religion is well part of him (he is Orthodox Jewish and views his Buddhism as compatible with his Judaism). I'm not much a fan of his post-monastery work, and if I have one regret it's that I discovered Leonard Cohen within the past ten years, and never got to see him live.

Know, too, that Cohen was a published poet--well-known in Canada--before he recorded music. He began to play guitar while reading poetry -- it went over well!

Leonard Cohen
By kestrel
I had a high school friend call me in my 30s. Hadn't been in touch for years. She said, plaintively,
"Hi, I just had to talk to someone who knew who Leonard Cohen was." :> Maybe they are easier to
find now. That was in the 1980s.

He's a remarkable man and his poems and songs are very dip-in-able, again and again.
It is inspiring that he can trust his pen, his paper and his heart/mind to just lay it out there.

Appreciatively.

Letting Go? investigates path-breaking public history practices at a time when the traditional expertise of museums seems challenged at every turn―by the Web and digital media, by community-based programming, by new trends in oral history and by contemporary art. In this anthology of 19 thought pieces, case studies, conversations and commissioned art, almost 30 leading practitioners such as Michael Frisch, Jack Tchen, Liz Ševcenko, Kathleen McLean, Nina Simon, Otabenga Jones and Associates, and Fred Wilson explore the implications of letting audiences create, not just receive, historical content. Drawing on examples from history, art, and science museums, Letting Go? offers concrete examples and models that will spark innovative work at institutions of all sizes and budgets. This engaging new collection will serve as an introductory text for those newly grappling with a changing field and, for those already pursuing the goal of “letting go,” a tool for taking stock and pushing ahead.

Review
“Opening a capacious window onto today’s core challenge to history museums—situating historical authority—the chapters in Letting Go? range from the scholarly to the eminently practical. … [It] reminds us that no matter its theoretical appeal, public curation still must be examined from the visitor’s perspective. An ambitious collection, Letting Go? will be valuable for scholar/practitioner/student of the museum field as its continues to define, address and advocate for greater public engagement in our digital age.”

— Leslie Bedford, Director, Leadership in Museum Education Program, Bank Street College of Education

“This wide-ranging collection of perspectives from some of public history’s most innovative practitioners doesn’t so much reject the idea of authority as expand it. Each one shows us how we can develop new expertise for enacting inclusive processes, which not only raise the visibility and social value of what the public may contribute, but simultaneously cultivate the strong community relationships sustaining our institutions into the future. It’s both an essential and energizing set of examples, putting this vital ethos into completely practical terms.”

— Daniel Spock, Director, History Center Museum, Minnesota Historical Society

“User-generated content -- it’s the cutting-edge idea behind everything from Facebook to Wikipedia. And it’s making a huge impact on museums and other public history venues. In this volume you’ll catch some of the sparks shooting off of this exciting new work. And also discover some of the principals that are emerging: how good boundaries paradoxically make for better creative expression, and why historians’ traditional strengths—context, editing, presentation—are needed even more in this new world.”

— Tom Hanchett, Staff Historian, Levine Museum of the New South, Charlotte

“Our values direct what we do and how we do it. Letting Go? recognizes power structures in existing models and challenges us to articulate our values, reflect on our work, and sharpen our practice. Are we truly living out our values? Letting Go? provides fresh directions for meaningful, responsive and strategic community-based work.”

— Cassie Chinn, Deputy Executive Director, Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience

“Technically, historical authority has always been shared with the public, but the expert public voice has not always been able to break through the practiced illusions of monumental scholarship and hallowed history. The marvelous and inspiring examples in Letting Go? will shape the aspirations of the future history museum as its practice leaders readjust their grip on ideas of authority. It will also guide institutions as they fulfill the next steps after letting go: reaching out, embracing lives, and reflecting, in the presence of the past and each other, on the complex beauties of our culture. This is a book about becoming something together, our most important process as human beings.”

—David Carr, author of Open Conversations: Public Learning in Libraries and Museums

“Authority. What is it and who has it? Or better, Who used to have it and who has it now? Museums generally, but history museums especially, have been wrestling with these questions for two decades. This useful and intelligent offering from Pew, with contributions from 21 artists, educators, and museum practitioners, may help us get closer to some answers. Or even refine the questions, which seem to be along the lines of What is lost and what is gained when we invite the public into the once-sacred realm of interpretation?”

— Museum Magazine

“The central premise of Letting Go is that the museum generation of the 21st century is defined by shared authority and collaborative making of meaning with the public.... The essays and conversations in Letting Go are accessible and share important insights, best practices, and hard-won experiences with readers. Together, they would be of use to students and scholars, especially those in museum studies, history, material culture studies, anthropology, and art.  Letting Go... fills a need for guides on sharing authority for new and established museum professionals and those who work with museums.”

— Museum Anthropology

"Thought-provoking….The contributors are museum educators, exhibition designers, public-history specialists, artists, cultural activists, and others who present or evaluate new ways of thinking about public history and how knowledge is acquired."?

Set mainly in London in the late 1950s this noir-ish mystery thriller is redolent with the atmosphere of the underworld and jazz in post war England.
It concerns the adventures of a young musical savant, Jim Davis, as he journeys from boy to man, from obscurity to fame and from repression to freedom.

More from this author please
By Collie
I have already reviewed this wonderful little book but now find it is on kindle.
Beautifully written, lovely drawings on cover both children and adults would find it a roller coaster right to the last word. It was hard to put down to get on with other things. I managed to read it in three sittings. We watch Jim,the main character growing up and going through remarkable twists and turns that make one's heart leap with fear and admiration. Other characters are finely and sensitively drawn, some who make you angry and some who elicit your sympathy. The knowledge this writer has of London in the time of the 1950s is either because he lived through them or has been thoroughly researched.
Written by somebody who obviously understands the inner mind of a teenager growing up and where one can learn much about jazz & the period of the 1950s at the same time. I do wish I could find more works by this author. Have looked in vain but will be on a constant lookout.

Pneumatic power is ideal for the ever increasing range of 'light' applications in which a cheap, clean, adaptable source of power is needed. Used in conjunction with microprocessor control it forms the basis of manufacturing automation from basic conveying and handling lines to complex robotic assembly systems. Training courses and books aimed at the technician have not kept pace with these developments. This book is written to cover the British Fluid Power Association Pneumatics Certificate, which is also awarded as part of CGLI scheme 2340, and is in the process of NVQ accreditation at level 3.

'Practical Pneumatics' provides a clear and detailed discussion of pneumatic technology by tackling the principles of pneumatic components and the behaviour of air under compression, during treatment and in applications to production processes. The non-mathematical approach, the numerous detailed diagrams and the many exercises and examples explain concepts clearly and concisely and provide students with a foundation from which to develop practical competence.

Tells you what you need to know
By Lord Flashheart
This is pretty good.

I've often wondered why the books written for technicians are, generally speaking, a lot clearer than those written for engineers. I suspect the answer is that the former are written by practitioners while the latter are written by college professors whose grasp of reality tends to be tenuous at best.

Highly recommended as a primer to design and development of pneumatic systems

Nocturnes, by Kazuo Ishiguro

From the award-winning author of Remains of the Day comes an inspired sequence of stories, which is as affecting as it is beautiful.

With the clarity and precision that have become his trademarks, Kazuo Ishiguro interlocks five short pieces of fiction to create a world that resonates with emotion, heartbreak, and humor. Here is a fragile, once famous singer, turning his back on the one thing he loves; a music junky with little else to offer his friends but opinion; a songwriter who inadvertently breaks up a marriage; a jazz musician who thinks the answer to his career lies in changing his physical appearance; and a young cellist whose tutor has devised a remarkable way to foster his talent. For each, music is a central part of their lives and, in one way or another, delivers them to an epiphany.

From Publishers Weekly
This suite of five stories hits all of Ishiguro's signature notes, but the shorter form mutes their impact. In Crooner, Tony Gardner, a washed-up American singer, goes sloshing through the canals of Venice to serenade his trophy wife, Lindy. The narrator, Jan, is a hired guitar player whose mother was a huge fan of Tony, but Jan's experience playing for Tony fractures his romantic ideals. Lindy returns in the title story, which finds her in a luxury hotel reserved for celebrity patients recovering from cosmetic surgery. The narrator this time is Steve, a saxophonist who could never get a break because of his loser ugly looks. Lindy idly strikes up a friendship with Steve as they wait for their bandages to come off and their new lives to begin. In the final story, Cellists, an unnamed saxophonist narrator who, like Jan, plays in Venice's San Marco square, observes the evolving relationship of a Hungarian cello prodigy after he meets an American woman. The stories are superbly crafted, though they lack the gravity of Ishiguro's longer works (Never Let Me Go; Remains of the Day), which may leave readers anticipating a crescendo that never hits. From Bookmarks Magazine
Ishiguro blends musical concepts with their literary counterparts in his latest work, and Nocturnes has the ephemeral quality of a song cycle with recurring themes and motifs developed in different prose keys. Though critics admired Ishiguro's lovely writing, "unassuming to the point of near-invisibility, like a lake whose still surface belies the turbulent currents beneath" (Los Angeles Times), they took issue with his characters—insubstantial and unconvincing when compared to the haunting creations found in his novels—and his implausible plot developments. Perhaps Entertainment Weekly summed it up best by stating that Nocturnes, by any other writer, would be praiseworthy; by a celebrated author like Ishiguro, it can best be likened to a minor work from a master composer.

Review
"Expressive and harmonic, delicate yet substantive. . . . [A] true virtuoso performance."--Christian Science Monitor

"In both craft and substance Nocturnes reveals a master at work."--Seattle Times

"Immaculate."--Los Angeles Times

"Ishiguro is, as always, a master of style and tone . . . . [Nocturnes] build[s] into a melancholic soundtrack. We're helpless to do anything but listen."--Time Out New York

"Tight and assured. . . . Suffused with sympathy." --Time

“These stories recall Ishiguro's best known novel, The Remains of the Day. . . . By now it is clear that this exquisite stylist is serious in his pursuit of a minimal - perhaps even universal - mode of expression for the emotional experiences that define our lives as human.”—The Times, London

“Superb . . . a deceptively plain and easy style that rides on the surfaces of manners and decorous behavior.”—Providence Journal

"A brilliant new book . . . art, its dangers, its pains and its gaiety [are] all topics seriously considered in this accomplished book."-Frank Kermode, London Review of Books

"Ishiguro blends musical concepts with their literary counterparts in his latest work, and Nocturnes has the . . . quality of a song cycle with recurring themes and motifs developed in different prose keys."--Bookmarks magazine

Involving Collection with One Great Story
By Ethan Cooper
"Cellists", the final story in NOCTURNES, is superior work. In this story, a young cellist, Tibor, works closely with an unconventional teacher, Eloise, who makes him feel like he is a superior musician. Eventually, the story shows that Eloise, who considers both herself and Tibor to be virtuosos, has a sensitivity to music that is beyond her musicianship. Nonetheless, their musical interaction has a lifetime effect on Tibor, who thereafter has to adapt his talent and sense of virtuosity to his opportunities.

IMHO, the four other stories in NOCTURNES are less successful. Why? In "Cellists", Ishiguro presents, explores, and resolves a situation. But in his other stories, he captures characters after a transformational event has occurred ("Crooner") or life-shaping attitudes have formed ("Nocturne"). Or, his stories capture moments before an emotional situation has attained focus ("Come Rain or Come Shine" and "Malvern Hills"). These stories, in other words, present, but don't really resolve a dynamic. They read like they could be chapters in longer works that Ishiguro will never write.

The subtitle of NOCTURNES, "Five Stories of Music and Nightfall", is atmospheric and right for Ishiguro, whose stories don't really convey a clear sense of place, even though he identifies the location of his first four stories as Venice, London, Malvern Hills, and Hollywood. These stories unfold in dream-like bubbles, where the characters and the small decisions they make often seem a trifle weird and implausible.

Even so, an alternative and more telling subtitle might be "Five Stories of Success and Relationships," since the issue of success within difficult or strange relationships is at or near the center of these stories. Recommended.

Do not bother.
By Marilyn
Had high hopes but, alas. Each story started well but ended mysteriously. In other words, the endings made no sense. I would not recommend it. Ishiguro's best: The Remains of the Day and, my all time favorite(which I read twice) Never Let Me Go. He is a good writer, is a pleasure to read but, I like my stories to make sense.

Not as good as his novels
By risk
Nice stories, but the stories don't live up to my expectations. By far not the same power and art as his longer novels.
