Interesting but missing something

This book presents a debate between two thinkers on whether or not the American empire is a positive development or negative. While one presents the usual arguments for isolationism and multi-lateralism, despite the fact that it hasn't worked when it comes to preventing genocide in Darfur, the other presents arguments for America as a global empire with interests everywhere policing conflicts.

But the debate misses a third point: the concept of the idea of American empire is itself flawed. America is a hegemon for all intents but whether that means it is an empire or that it wants to be an empire or is imperialistic is another matter. What is an empire? A third point should have been made that the arguments against American empire are arguing against a straw man that doesn't exist, and that there really are very few people that think America should be defined as an 'empire'.

Eye-opening and convicting

It seems amazing that this is one of the only books in Christianity on the topic of humility, especially considering the case that Murray makes for it. at the same time I don't know if another one is needed.

Murray makes the case that humility is Jesus' primary work and goal in our lives. It's what distinguishes Him and true Christianity from everything else. Out of this virtue flows all the the rest of the characteristics of Christ and Christianity. It is the mark of genuine faith and considering that fact, it's sad how much it's lacking in churches today.

Every reader will come face-to-face with their own need for greater Christlikeness but also informed with how God can work it into their life.

No one writes books on humility...except the newest, C.Peter Wagner, who has written a good one. He also mentions this book, by Andrew Murray, which is an old time classic. There are just too many people out there trying to be spiritual hot-shots, and there is only One and that is the Lord Jesus Christ...He is the one and only Hot-shot out there! This book should be in every Christian's library and should be read regularly. Like David, I pray this prayer for myself...."Let not the foot of pride come against me, nor the hand of the wicked remove me." Pride is so ugly and deadly...humility is the cure!

Excellent book - very poor edition

I won't give the book anything less than five stars, but this edition is terrible - typos all through it - buy one of the other versions. Andrew Murray's understanding of humility as one the most paradoxical of the virtues is top-notch. To be humble is the goal, but to recognize humility in one's own life is to immediately undo its work. A very good book for study groups and Christians seriously seeking to be more like Jesus Christ.

About the Author

Kenneth R. White, PhD, APRN-BC, FACHE, FAAN, is the University of Virginia (UVA) Medical Center endowed professor of nursing and associate dean for strategic partnerships and innovation in the School of Nursing at UVA. He also holds joint appointments in the UVA Darden School of Business and McIntire School of Commerce. He has more than 40 years experience in healthcare organizations in clinical, administrative, governance, and consulting capacities. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing as well as a Fellow, former Regent, and former member of the Board of Governors of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

J. Stephen Lindsey, MHA, FACHE,has been a principal with Ivy Ventures, LLC, since 2003 and focuses on growth opportunities and business development. Before joining Ivy Ventures, he served as the CEO of HCA Henrico Doctors Hospital in Richmond, Virginia for many years and held the position of chairman of Manorhouse Retirement Centers. He is an adjunct professor in the Department of Health Administration at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he taught executive skills and coordinated the residency program for a number of years. Before entering the healthcare field, he was an infantry officer in the US Army.

About the Author
Robert D. Griffin, M.A., has been teaching biology for 27 years. For the last 19 years he has been on the faculty of City College of San Francisco, where he has taught biology courses ranging from anatomy to zoology. Previously he had extensive experience teaching in junior and senior high schools and in special science programs for gifted elementary school students. His principal academic interest is in innovative methods of teaching biological concepts and reasoning to both liberal arts students and biology majors.

Great ,it's that simple

I teach high school biology and physical science . My students in general are probably on anywhere between a 4th-to on grade level learning. All of my students do much better with hands on activities so I thought coloring would be great. The book is defiantly for older students however-it helps raise the bar for my students in a less threatening way. With that said let me describe the book:On one page you get a lesson-as you read it it tell you to stop and color a part of the picture and then you continue to read-and then stop and color. That's awesome. Very paced and structured . In addition it's not just biology-it has covers everything from matter to covalent bonds -but covers way more biology. All in all a great buy.

Good, but not great.

Im a college student who purchased this book for a class. I recognize that it is not intended for my age group, however, I found the writing to be somewhat confusing even knowing knowing the material already being discussed. The pictures were very detailed to the point I didn't even want to begin coloring as there was so much to do--I'm not an artist nor do I color for fun. In that regard some might enjoy it much more than I. Overall it was good and did cover the main topics that were covered in my General Biology 1 course that I had taken.

`That night on the golf course...'

Successful author and publisher Rick Bettencourt brings back on stage Dan Sexton, a writer new to many of us, in a the completed version of his earlier brief novella HANDY MEN DO IT BETTER: the new completed full length, `fleshed out' version is now called THE HANDY MAN CAN, and the steam does indeed rise.

Florida, contemporary times. Jake Honeywell is a 23 year old `blond, green-eyed, six foot two' hunk of a landscaper and in between conversations with his sister and brother he meets 28 year old Cory Hamilton, a hunky golfer from North Carolina who flips real estate for a living. Both men are conflicted about coming out but together they manage to be honest and the results are spontaneous and sensual.

Dan Sexton has the solid approach in writing male erotica to make sure that the characters he manipulates are not clones but real men with real conflicts, family and lives beyond the moments of encounters. He introduces maternal alcoholism, DUIs, and the needs of Jake that prompt his moving out of his humble Florida family home. Then realities rise - Cory has a girl in North Carolina and moves back. Jake shares a small apartment with a straight guy Steve, but of course eventually Cory is free and Jake is longing and they start their sensual relationship all over again - with phone sex! And does it build r=form there! This is steamy, raw and rough - just what you might expect form a Handyman - or a man who is `handy'.

This is a good `coming out' story written by a lad who seems to have the talent to pursue longer novels. Dan Sexton writes well and has this particular manly genre down well. Grady Harp, April 15

Dear Colleague,

 

Now in a new Second Edition, How to Think Logically is a concise and user-friendly textbook for freshman-level logic and critical thinking courses. Focused throughout on arguments and how we may evaluate them, the book is intended to show students how to distinguish between arguments that ought to persuade us and those that should not. It presents students with criteria for assessing both deductive and inductive reasoning, and it does so in a clear writing style much praised by our students. "This book is well written and structured," students have told us again and again over the ten semesters since it first appeared. "It’s easy to understand."

 

We believe that critical thinking skills are more vital than ever as a component of a liberal education. In a world where college graduates face increasingly fierce competition for jobs, those who are careful reasoners, lucid writers, and clear-headed thinkers are simply better equipped to succeed in any area of specialization. Learning these skills, however, should not be a dry, dull process, but an exercise leavened with humor and down-to-earth examples that students can understand.

 

How to Think Logically accomplishes these goals with materials designed specifically for readers who have never encountered philosophy before, and for whom analytical thinking may at first be an unfamiliar exercise. In our courses at the City University of New York, at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, and at the University of Texas Pan American, we have used this book with students from a great number of different nationalities, ethnicities, and economic backgrounds. Invariably, we find that students respond well to its simple format, lively examples, and plain language.

 

In addition, this textbook comprises only enough material for a standard fifteen-week course (with flexibility to allow instructors options for different approaches); thus students are not paying for material they don’t use. This helps us keep costs down, a welcome feature at a time when students are struggling with soaring tuition and fees!

 

But at no point does How to Think Logically compromise on logical rigor. The book charts a mainstream course through discussions of natural language, meaning, truth, belief, and definition. It discusses twenty of the most common informal fallacies, explaining what is wrong with each type and how to avoid it. It also includes an expanded treatment of deductive reasoning, both in modern, propositional logic (including the rudiments of symbolic notation and natural deduction) and traditional, syllogistic logic. We believe that this is the book instructors have been looking for. It presents a broad and immensely readable approach to introductory-level logic, yet it does so concisely and at moderate cost.

Very engaging

Perhaps some of my personal bias will leak into this review but I will try remain objective. I'm in the fifth week of the class this book was required for. My teacher is very enjoyable, but aside from that, I found this "text," if it can be called that, to be very easy to read and understand. I would even venture to say, it shouldn't be viewed as a textbook, but rather, a self-paced guide through critical thinking. Even though my major is physics, I intend to keep this book. Definitely a good reference when writing a research paper or something of such nature and even if you don't use it as a reference, I think everyone could benefit from the self-enlightenment this book will bring you.
