Not perfect but usable
By sascha wüst
Be warned: You will not be able to get a running cluster (even a test cluster) with this cookbook if you follow the commands without understanding what you are doing. The book needs a revision before it is error free. It is a good help if you want to want to review you own scripts or have problems with the original documentation on docs.ceph.com though.

Easy to follow and understand in a true Cookbook-like style
By Johan R.
If you're interested in learning about Software Defined Storage and how to get it up and running with Ceph, then this book is definitely for you! Just like the title states, the book is built up like a cookbook, with easy to follow Ceph recipes and more information on how it can be served.
Theirs a lot of practical examples in the book about how to install, setup, maintain, monitor and performance tune a Ceph cluster. All examples are easy to follow and the author has prepared all the ingredients you'll need to get your lab environment up and running in a fast and simple way.
First you'll get a short introduction to Ceph and why a technology like Ceph is needed now and in the future. Then you'll get more information on how this book is built to help you follow the more than 100 recipes. The recipes are well organized and you can easily follow them from the first to the last to learn the most on how Ceph is used. Besides Ceph there's some practical recipes where you setup complete integrated solutions with OwnCloud a Dropbox-like file sync and share service, integration with the OpenStack Cinder, Glance and Nova components.
This book really gives you the tools to succeed in learning Ceph in your own pace and it's easily applicable to real-life needs. This is true knowledge transfer at its best in the form of a book.
I've read Karan Singh's first book "Learning Ceph" before this one which was great too. There's no need to read both of them to be successful with this one, but the first book goes more into details on a theoretical level - this one gives great hands-on straight away.

DO NOT BUY! COMMANDS NOT ACCURATE. Missing steps, and inaccurate information. Extremely disappointed.

The other reviewer of this book must be a friend of the author because he has obviously not tried to use this book to learn ceph.
I bought this book direct from Packt, but they won't let you post reviews there. I have used cookbook type books in the past and almost always been happy with them, this is not the case this time.
The instructions start in chapter 2 and before the end of the chapter, there is one process (connecting a cinder ceph volume to a running instance) that no matter how many times you follow the instructions doesn't work. That doesn't even cover the config files for yum I had to update by hand because the author is using a 1.5 year old version of openstack in book only published a month ago, and the yum path for that repo doesn't exist anymore.
I skipped that problem and went to chapter 3. On the very first set of instructions you are told to install a package that says its already installed. I did a reinstall just incase it was needed. You are then told to edit a file that doesn't exist and start a service that isn't there, both related to the package you are supposed to install that claims to already be installed.
These are errors in the first few chapters. Shows that no one checked this to make sure it worked. I wish packt would give refunds for ebooks but they don't, which I do understand. I however wish I could post this review there as well to make sure no one ever buys this book
