You don't have to play the Xbox 360 video game "Perfect Dark Zero" to enjoy this book even though the novel based on the game. Anyone can enjoy the story of a future in which five giant corporations control the world. Ex-bounty hunter Joanna Dark tries to bring down the worst of the bunch. The half of the book read by Orlagh Cassidy is superior to the parts read by Scott Sowers. Sowers isn't bad, but Cassidy is special, partly because of her ability to mimic accents. She does at least three flawlessly. The undercurrent of tension in her voice adds to the charged atmosphere. Rucka knows how to create a universe, and Cassidy makes it real. Perfect Dark near close to perfect
By madbaumer
I have been interested in the xbox 360 game for a while, so when I saw the book, I had to get. Well, I bought it, read it, and enjoyed it. The only problem that I had with the book was that I felt that some of the conflicts were solved too simply. Other than that, I am hoping for a continuation within the Perfect Dark universe. As for a side note, if you have not played the game yet, the book will reveal some spoilers.

Initial Vector is one fun book! Full of twists, scares and espionage!
By jdubbx9
As a long time fan of Perfect Dark Nintendo 64, I've always been interested in the storyline. After completing Perfect Dark Zero I was disappointed by the dialogue, character development and some designs. The overall plot was still very interesting. So I decided to purchase Initial Vector, Janus' Tears, and Second Front.
I just completed Initial Front and it was amazing. The author did an excellent job connecting the story to the Nintendo 64 storyline. All the characters, weapons and settings connected the events of both games.
The author personally played both Perfect Dark games and studied the story so that he could create a compelling novel without missing any information. As a fan, I am very pleased. I could easily see this book becoming a video game itself, or even a film. It was even better than Perfect Dark Zero, even though it is just written material. I really cared about the characters and what happened to them. I especially loved Joanna's development as she came to trust the Carrington Institute and eventually see her boss as a father figure. She struggles with the deaths of her father and eventually a new agent in the novel. She also struggles with the idea that she is a killer, while Carrington tries to convince her she is a soldier for good and kills only when necessary.
Cassandra DeVries has excellent development in the novel. We see how her character goes from caring and driven, to cold and addicted to power once she is betrayed by her lover, Daniel Carrington.
The book also hits on how dataDyne recovered after CEO Zhang Li's death, or rather 'disappearance,' and depicts a long CEO election campaign.
Not only that, the novel explains why the world has flying cars and futurist technology. It explains why the world of Perfect Dark, is the way it is. And that fact, makes this a perfect book!
These novels need more recognition. If you think PD Zero destroyed the franchise, check out the written material. It not only brings back the intriguing story from the Nintendo 64 version, but makes it even better. It will restore your thoughts about the franchise.
